Susanna Pierre (born Zuzana Pjer; 15 February 1915 - 16 August 1990), was the fourth President of Kerlile and second Pierre Family member of the Council of Kerlile. Pierre was born in 1915 in Kvask, emigrating to Kerlile (then North Fleura) with her mother at the age of nine in 1924. Her mother, Marilène Pierre was one of the Founding Mothers of Kerlile.
During Pierre's presidency, military spending was cut, however intelligence spending increased and there was a widespread clampdown on civil rights across Kerlile. While undiscovered during her life, Pierre was later credited as the founder of the controversial sleeper agent training Aurora Programme. She was the grandmother of the current Councillor Pauline Pierre.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Pierre was born as part of the Pjer family in Kvask. The Pjers were a minor house within the Sieghard Empire, controlling part of what is now Rszevnik. Within the War of the Pines, the Pjer house aided the Koczi house and gained a seat at the bargaining table. With power in their hands, they survived and even established the National Communist government of 1854.
However, by 1920, the people having toiled for decades under the boot of the Pjer family, rose up and destroyed their hold on Kvask, forcing nine-year-old Susanna and her mother to flee westward to North Fleura, where Susanna's mother Marilène became one of the Founding Mothers of Kerlile four years later, changing their names. Susanna's father was among those publicly executed in Pine's Triad.
Founding of Kerlile[edit | edit source]
Between the ages of 9 to 19, the young Susanna lived with her mother during her the management of Lunalea Region, one of the sixteen regions of Kerlile that from 1924 to 1934 were managed autonomously by one of the Founders of Kerlile. In Lunalea, Marilène Pierre worked to eradicate 'patriarchal sentiment', which included mass executions of a number of men, and strict laws regulating speech. Land was seized from a number of male North Fleuran nobles and given to women.
From the age of 13 onwards, Susanna actively assisted her mother in the administration of the province, including arranging executions and monitoring the pace of 'matriarchal transformation' in towns across the region. At the age of 15, Susanna led a raid on an alleged 'patriarchal cult' in the region, killing seven men.
On the Council[edit | edit source]
Pierre took her seat on the Council of Kerlile following the death of her mother in 1959, when Susanna was 44. From the beginning of her career as a Councillor of Kerlile, Susanna was an advocate for strict Anti-Matriarchal Activity laws, harsh punishments for dissidents, and a clampdown on civil rights in the country as part of the transition to Gynarchy. In 1960, she was one of the strongest proponents of the closure of borders and the start of the emigration ban.
Presidency[edit | edit source]
Pierre was the first non-founder to become President, instead being the daughter of Marilène Pierre. Pierre did not agree with the explicit military posturing of her predecessor, and instead focused on building the intelligence service, ensuring compliance among citizens at home, and focusing on gathering information on foreign nations rather than threatening them.
In the 1970s there was a spate of disappearances across the country of orphans between the ages of 1 and 3. These were later ascribed to the secret foundation of the Aurora Programme. The disappearances were seen as the final nail in the coffin for Kerlian democracy, and further reinforced the idea that the Council was supreme.
In 1983, Councillor Joanne Robinson, who had only recently succeeded her mother to the Council in 1981, attempted to use an obscure measure in the 1960 constitution to ‘recall’ President Pierre back to the Council to answer for the negative image of Kerlile held across other nations. The Council voted on the measure, however the ‘coup attempt’ as it was deemed by Kerlian media failed by an unknown amount. The following morning, Councillor Robinson was found dead on the floor of the Council chamber.
Speculation at the time suggested the Robinson family was to be ostracised from the Council for this action, however this was not the case, and Joanne was succeeded by her daughter Sarah, who was pregnant at the time, after two months. No further challenges to Susanna Pierre’s presidency were issued.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Pierre's Presidency cemented the control of the Council of Kerlile over the populace of the Matriarchy. Her actions in founding the Aurora Programme arguably led to the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War almost thirty years after her death. Policies implemented during the Pierre Presidency continue to affect the lives of Kerlians, and many of the policies of the Reform Party target measures dating from that time.
