Fleura
Fleura is a province of Lauchenoiria. Historically, Fleura was an independent country from antiquity, before splitting into North Fleura and South Fleura in 1840. Present-day Fleura consists of the territory of the former state of South Fleura, while historical Fleura also incorporated North Fleura (present-day Kerlile).
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Fleura is a corruption of the Latin Flora, meaning plant life. It is believed that the nation is named after the ubiquitous flowers that cover the area around Lake Wallace; an etymology shared with Hanafleura, an Opthelian colony on the other side of Lake Wallace.
History[edit | edit source]
Independent Fleura[edit | edit source]
Fleura has existed as a nation since antiquity. The exact date at which Fleura first became a unified state is lost to history. The earliest records of an area known as Fleura date back to approximately 400 B.C., where the territory referred to is that north of the x river to Lake Wallace - an area comprising present-day Zongongia, Kerlile and parts of Lauchenoiria. However, by 900 A.D., Fleura and Zongongia had become distinct states; possibly due to the religious differences.
Valahandian wars[edit | edit source]
In the 1480s, Fleura took advantage of fighting between Yervian and Valahandian forces to conquer the northern part of Eastern Yervia; which is still part of Fleura Province today.
In the 1760s, the Valahandians were chased out of the Lauchenoirian area by the Fleurans, who took their colony as their own; which incorporated present-day Ulinaria Province and Melissa Province. Fleura (later South Fleura) chose not to incorporate the new adjoining land into their state, but rather administer the Ulinarian area as a separate colony.
North-South split[edit | edit source]
In the 1840s, a republican revolution took place in South Fleura. The revolution began in the southernmost parts of Fleura - those once held by Yervia prior to 1480. It is likely that Yervian agitators encouraged the revolution; however not all of Fleura was on board. The north of the country was distinctly monarchist, and resisted the possibility of becoming a republic. The conflict looked to persist, leading the Fleuran state to split in two in order to prevent a worse civil war; with North Fleura retaining the monarchy while South Fleura kept their Ulinarian colonial holding, and became a republic like neighbouring Yervia. The two Fleuras, however, periodically continued to disagree on the exact location of their border until 1920.
Within Lauchenoiria[edit | edit source]
In 1921, South Fleura was the initiator of the talks with Yervia and Costeno which resulted in Lauchenoirian unification. At the time, sceptics of unification accused South Fleura of coercing their neighbours into Lauchenoiria; however this has never been proven. Present-day Fleura contains the Lauchenoirian capital of Buttercity, and is seen as one of the most important provinces of Lauchenoiria.
