Opthelian Imperial Household[edit | edit source]

Titleage[edit | edit source]

Upon birth into the Imperial Household, an Imperial baby is issued a Lordship extending over various provinces within the Empire, thereby granting the child the status of high nobility. Invariably, the firstborn child of the reigning Emperor or Empress will be granted a First Lordship - the highest title before that of the Emperor or Empress themselves - while each of their subsequent children will instead be issued a Second Lordship. This practice continues for the children of all First Lords; while the children of Second Lords are often granted Lordships of their own, this is not their birthright, as it is for those children of First Lords.

Unlike most other linear monarchical systems, instead of being issued an ordinal at the time of ascension, those in line for the Opthelian throne are instead bestowed with one at birth. Similarly to that of Lordship titleage, this practice only extends to those children whose parents hold a First Lordship (therefore, the current reigning Emperor or Empress, their firstborn child, and so on). As a result, children of Second Lords do not earn this privilege, and their status is not taken into account when calculating the ordinal number for other members of the Imperial Household.

Finally, while those who are not of the noble bloodline of the Imperial Household may not be granted Lordships, it is almost universally accepted that the consort of a Lord shall be granted a Wardship over a prefecture (or a Grand Wardship over a minor province, for the consort of a First Lord), elevating them to the status of a nobleperson. Wardships of prefectures may also be bestowed upon other members of high standing within Opthelian society, and is the highest social rank a commoner can aspire to.
