Overview[edit | edit source]
The Secretary for the Treasury is the principal economic advisor to the Chancellor and plays a critical role in policy-making by bringing an economic and government financial policy perspective to issues facing the government. The Secretary is responsible for formulating and recommending domestic and international financial, economic, and tax policy, participating in the formulation of broad fiscal policies that have general significance for the economy, managing the public debt, and the creation of the annual Budget.
It is often seen as, along with the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, as the most senior and prestigious post one can hold in Government.
Budget[edit | edit source]
One of the most important aspects of the Secretary's work is the creation of the annual Budget which is announced to the House of Deputies in a speech. In the Budget the Secretary details the Government's spending programme for the coming year. The Budget consists of:
- a Financial Statement to the House of Deputies,
- Budgetary Measures,
- Budget Statistics and Tables, and
- various financial resolutions.
