The Secretary of State for Climate Change and the Environment, also known as the Secretary for the Environment or the Environment Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Climate Change and the Environment, which is tasked with responsibility for environmental policy and protection, climate change strategy, and preserving and enhancing Sanctaria's natural environments.

The current Secretary for the Environment is Mélina Terrell, who was appointed to the post on 14 December 2022.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Secretary for the Environment is a senior advisor to the Chancellor on matters relating to the environment, environmental protections, national park oversight and creation, oceanic and atmospheric monitoring, and the development of government policy regarding climate change. Examples of areas that come under the purview of the Environment Secretary is oversight of the national weather service, provision and upkeep of natural amenities such as national parks and natural attractions, and the development and enactment of climate change and environmental protection policies.

The Department of Climate Change and Environment was created on 01 February 2018. Its functions were transferred from other government departments and agencies, most notably the Department of Land Affairs.

Duties[edit | edit source]

Duties of the Environment Secretary include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the Sanctarian National Parks Service.
  • Management of processes that set and collect domestic tariffs and taxes relating to the department, such as waste management or carbon taxes.
  • Development and implementation of policy regarding how to combat climate change, as well as how best to protect the natural environment.
  • Regulation and oversight of the meteorological, oceanic, and atmospheric national agencies.
  • Management of processes that protect at-risk areas, such as greenbelt designation, or coastal areas prone to flooding.
