The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, less formally known as the Secretary for Foreign Affairs or Foreign Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Foreign Affairs, which is concerned with the foreign affairs and diplomatic missions of the Divine Federation. The Secretary for Foreign Affairs also has responsibility for the foreign intelligence services, and oversees aid and development. The current Secretary for Foreign Affairs is Dr. Bethany Greer MP who was confirmed on 02 March 2024 by the Senate, having been nominated the previous day.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Secretary for Foreign Affairs is the principal advisor to the Chancellor on matters of foreign affairs and plays a critical role in policy-making by bringing an international perspective to issues facing the government.
It is often seen as, along with the Secretary for the Treasury, as the most senior and prestigious post one can hold in Government.
Duties[edit | edit source]
As the head of the Sanctarian Foreign Service, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs is responsible for management of the diplomatic service of the Divine Federation. The foreign service employs about 121,000 people domestically and internationally, and supports scores of Sanctarian diplomatic missions around the world, including ambassadors to various nations.
Aside from organising and supervising the Sanctarian Foreign Service, other duties the Secretary for Foreign Affairs include:
- Advising the Government and the Chancellor on matters relating to Sanctarian foreign policy, including the appointment of diplomatic representatives to other nations, and on the acceptance or dismissal of representatives from other nations.
- Oversight of Sanctaria's involvement in the World Assembly through appointment of and discussions with the Sanctarian Ambassador to the World Assembly.
- Participating in high-level negotiations with other countries, either bilaterally or as part of an international conference or organisation, or appointing representatives to do so. This does not include, however, the negotiation of international trade agreements or other relevant economic treatise; negotiations and oversight of such is under the purview of the Trade Secretary.
- Overall direction, coordination, and supervision of interdepartmental activities of the Sanctarian Government overseas.
- Providing information and services to Sanctarian citizens living or traveling abroad, including providing credentials in the form of passports and visas.
- Supervising Sanctarian Aid, the overseas aid and development arm of the Sanctarian government.
- Oversight of the foreign intelligence service, the Sanctarian Intelligence Service.
