The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, also known as the Secretary for Science or the Science Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, which is tasked with the responsibility for science policy, oversight of the nation's space program, and technology development and promotion.
The current Secretary for Science is Dr. Laura Parker, who was appointed to the post on 01 February 2018. The department was officially created by legislation later that same day.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Secretary for Science is a senior advisor to the Chancellor on matters relating to scientific policy, innovation and intellectual property law, the space program, as well as technology in a broad and general sense. Examples of areas that come under the purview of the Science Secretary include patents and trade marks, information and communication technology industry development, and support through direct and indirect means of scientific research.
The Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology was created on 01 February 2018. Its functions were transferred from other government departments and agencies, most notably the Department of Commerce.
Duties[edit | edit source]
Duties of the Science Secretary include, but are not limited to:
- Oversight of the Sanctarian Space Agency.
- Management and supervision of the Sanctarian Intellectual Property Office.
- Responsibility for the rollout of reliable broadband across Sanctaria, with a particular concentration in rural areas.
- Development and implementation of science and technology policies.
- Provision of state funding to research foundations and laboratories.
