The Secretary of State for Families and Youth, also known as the Secretary for Families or the Families Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Families and Youth, which is tasked with responsibility for child protection strategy, community development, and community and family services.

The current Secretary for Families is David Hughes, who was appointed to the post on 01 February 2018. The department was officially created by legislation later that same day.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Secretary for Families is a senior advisor to the Chancellor on matters relating to children and youth affairs, such as child protection, the supervision of community services, and the development of government policy regarding troubled and at-risk families and communities. Examples of areas that come under the purview of the Families Secretary is oversight of adoption authorities and fostering services, provision of community services and amenities such as youth clubs and libraries, regulation of family services sector and those who work with it, such as social workers, and the development and support of community and family based schemes such as Tidy Towns & Villages, Neighbourhood Watch schemes, and schemes to support the elderly in the community.

The Department of Families and Youth was created on 01 February 2018. Its functions were transferred from other government departments and agencies, most notably the Departments of Human Services and Communities.

Duties[edit | edit source]

Duties of the Families Secretary include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the Sanctarian Adoption Authority.
  • Regulation of social services, such as fostering services, social work services, and domestic abuse protection services.
  • Development and implementation of policy regarding how to best to help troubled and at-risk families.
  • Provision of community services, schemes, and grants, such as those towards community libraries, community centres, and youth clubs.
  • Regulation and oversight of the charity, non-profit, and volunteering sectors.
