In this traditional Haesanite name, the family name is Jang.
Jang Su-mi (Haean: 장수미, born 8 March 1999) is a Haesanite archer competing in women's recurve events. She is an Olympic gold medalist, having won the women's individual event at the Hanshui 2023 Olympiad. She is also an Olympic recordholder, with her score of 724[1] in the 75 arrow women's individual trial breaking the previous record held by Jacqueline Durand of Eiria.
Youth Career[edit | edit source]
Jang started archery in elementary school, and from a young age had success at Hyeonsan Central Grammar School at the Seocheon Provincial field day. In association school, she emerged as a potential talent, winning the Seocheon Province Association School Archery Championship in Year 8 by a margin of 10 points. In Year 9, she was scouted by elite preparatory schools looking to bolster their archery programs, and was financed by boosters to attend Seongho Preparatory in Sinju, Sinhan. Her parents moved to support her education, and in Prep School competition, she finished 3rd at the national finals in Year 11, and 2nd in Year 12.
Collegiate Career[edit | edit source]
While a qualified academic candidate, Jang's archery skill is what ultimately drove her acceptance into Namseon University in Suyang, a National Conference university. In her four years at Namseon, at the Haesanite Collegiate Championships, she was a member of three gold medal winning women's teams, and the Namseon team won silver her sophomore year. She won bronze in the women's individual events in 2019, and won gold in 2020 and 2021. She was also part of a gold medal winning mixed-doubles team in 2020. Balancing archery and academics, Jang graduated magna cum laude in June of 2021.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
Jang has had success at many national and international archery competitions, rapidly becoming a fixture of the Haesanite national team. Additionally, she has served as a consultant on various media productions, including performing stunts and trick-shots for various action movies and appearing as a coach, trainer, and judge on SBS's Idol Olympics. In October 2022, she reached 1st in the world rankings, only for the title to be retaken by Catli of Xiomera a few months later. Her visibility as a representative of Haesan's national sport and recent run of dominance in the international scene has earned her the moniker "Archery Queen" in Haesan's press.
Hanshui 2023[edit | edit source]
Jang Su-mi was selected to be Haesan's flagbearer for the Hanshui '23 Olympics Opening Ceremony, along with the curler Jacques Tessier. In the individual event, she set an Olympic Record of 724 points, scoring 51 bulls-eyes and 16 Xs on her way to winning gold. That gold was the first ever medal for Haesan at an IDU Olympiad. A disappointing performance in the team event partnered with Park Jun-hyeok saw them fall short of the medaling places.
