Henry Milton (born July 13, 1990) is a Maximusian professional tennis player widely regarded as one of the best players in the nation's history. During the 2021 New Riga Olympic Games, Milton won the gold medal for men's singles tennis and silver in men's doubles. He repeated this performance at the 2023 Hanshui Olympic Games, once again earning gold in singles. Alongside his partner, Winston Sullivan, Milton won the bronze medal for men's doubles at Hanshui.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Henry Milton was born Heinrich Yohan Milton in the western Maximusian province of Newcastle to an ethnic Iasgier mother (originally from Bjeorg) and a Newcastle native father shortly before the outbreak of the 1991 Bjeorg Conflict. In elementary school, Heinrich's peers gave him the anglicized nickname, Henry, which he much preferred over his legal name. Henry demonstrated an early propensity for athletic achievement, joining a local youth football (soccer) league in 1999, but allegedly never picked up a racket until his 14th birthday. According to Milton's own account, as a birthday present in 2004, Henry's father bought him six months of tennis lessons. Over that summer, Milton fell in love with the sport and demonstrated a high degree of precocity, winning his first junior tournament in 2006. In 2007, Milton won the Under 18 National Juniors Championship, one of the most prestigious Maximusian junior tennis titles. As he developed as a player, Milton received coaching from former pro tennis player Philip Montagne for many years and was recruited to play for the Public University of Newcastle in 2008.
Career[edit | edit source]
Olympics[edit | edit source]
By the time of the 2019 Central Olympics qualifiers, Milton was ranked second in the nation following his defeat at the hands of John Moore during the 2018 Championship at Kipling Gardens, and was passed up the opportunity to compete in Shuell; many feared the best days of his career were behind him. By 2021, however, Milton had fought his way back to the top of the Maximusian leaderboard, qualifying for the 2021 Olympic Games in New Riga as the Maximusian entry for men's individual and alongside long-time doubles partner, Walter Sullivan, as his country's men's doubles entry. During the singles tournament, Milton shut out Cheng Zemin of Laeral and defeated Eril Neyzi of Serriel and Eli Stone of Astoria to win the gold medal on July 28, 2021. Alongside Sullivan, Milton also progressed to the men's doubles tennis final, but narrowly lost to Gardavasque's Underbridge and McHenry, earning the silver medal.
In 2023, Milton was once again selected to represent the Maximusians in men's tennis at the Hanshui Olympic Games. At the Olympiad's opening ceremony, Milton brought up the rear of the Maximusian delegation, wearing an all white tracksuit and Baudelaire-brand sports sunglasses, ostensibly in order to promote Baudelaire, a company he signed a lucrative sponsorship contract with in 2022. In the individual tournament, Milton faced sterner opposition than in New Riga, but once again took home the gold, defeating Sanctarian Lee Faber on July 20, 2023. Once again partnered with Sullivan, Milton was defeated in doubles tennis by the Opthelian pair, who went on to win gold, but was able to take home a medal by besting Ireameel Araya and Wilson Harel, the Kerlilian duo.
