The Secretary of State for Justice and Equality, also known as the Secretary for Justice or Justice Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Justice & Equality, which is concerned with the justice system, the courts, prisons and probationary services, the nation's federal police force, and equality and anti-discrimination policy in the nation. The current Justice Secretary is Josephine Chari-Jones, who was confirmed to the post on 02 March 2024 having been nominated the previous day; Chari-Jones is concurrently serving as Vice Chancellor.

Prior to February 2018, the position was generally known as the Secretary for Home Affairs. The Department itself has been renamed on a number of occasions.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Secretary of State for Justice is the principal advisor to the Chancellor on all matters relating to the justice system within Sanctaria. The Secretary is, among other things, responsible for forming government policy on the criminal justice and rehabilitation systems, judicial policy and appointments, and policing reform, financing, and governance.

The position was originally established in 1974 as the Secretary of State for Home Affairs, in charge of the Department of Home Affairs. At the time, the Secretary was also responsible for the nation's immigration and border policies, equality, and governmental reform. In the intervening years, some of those duties have been transferred to other departments.

Duties[edit | edit source]

The basic duties of the Secretary for Justice include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight, and reform, of the Sanctarian Federal Police.
  • Responsibility for offenders in Sanctarian federal prisons and rehabilitation centres, and oversight of both the Sanctarian Federal Prison Service, and the Probation and Welfare Service.
  • Oversight of the judiciary, the legal system, and responsibility for the Court System.
  • Ensuring legislation passed by the World Assembly is enacted in Sanctaria.
  • Advising the President on federal pardons and clemencies.[1]
  • Formulation and implementation of gender-equal policies, including gender quota legislation.
  • Responsibility for the designation of ethnic, linguistic, or racial minority status in Sanctaria.
  • Liaising with independent bodies such as the Sanctarian Human Rights Commission on matters affecting minorities.
  • Provision of support services, such as grants and funding, to the disabled and physically/mentally impaired communities.
  • Identification and resolution of discriminatory State practices and legislation.
