Background[edit | edit source]
In 2020, Joseph Chavez regained the Presidency after a 2-year absence, leading to the first dual-control of government and the Presidency by the National Alliance and the first by any party since the Center Party in 2016. Included in government was the Green Party as well as the Socialist-Labor and Farmers and Fishers as junior coalition partners. Although the Third Kaijan War had ended it's open conflict in early 2021, the issues of Kaijan was a key stumbling block for the government, in addition a narrow coalition meant compromising on foreign policy. In addition, the Centrist Party had established itself as a strictly center-center right party with left-wing voters opting for the Greens.
Pre-election process[edit | edit source]
On January 24th, 2022, an election was called for the earliest possible date of December 28th, 2022 per the Elections Law of 1974. This motion was approved by a majority of parliament with a vote of 330-299-14. It was then signed by President Joseph Chavez and confirmed by the Slokais Islands Board of Elections. The motion was pushed both by the Green-National Alliance bloc and also by Kaijanese parties after polls showed support for Kaijanese Independence was high. 9 national parties began their primaries, selecting party lists. Only the National Alliance and the Conservative Party of Slokais created lists for all 643 seats. The Conservative Primary saw George Oliver lose to former President Brooke Weasley leading to Oliver running an independent campaign.
Format[edit | edit source]
Similar to other elections, a Presidential and Legislative Election were held concurrently in addition to standard 2 and 4 year elections in certain provinces and townships. Voting was conducted on a instant runoff system, were all candidates with greater then 1% aggerate national polling or 5% in each province were added to a ballot, voters would pick there first choice and then there second, and third candidate. If no candidate, had reached 50% by the third round, an election would be held on January 16th between the two top candidates. This system only applies to the Presidential and Provincial Governor Elections, with Legislative voting occurring by voters voting for one party list presented by the party in each province. From there each party would get proportional representation based on there vote share in said province.[a]
Ballots[edit | edit source]
Ballots were produced by the Slokais Islands Electoral Bureau (SIEB) on November 15th, using polling data provided by New Liverpool University/Howard Prince-Gonzalez Institution. All candidates and parties which had 1% nationwide were automatically added with an additional section provided for voters to write-in a party or candidate. 12 candidates and 11 parties qualified for nationwide ballot access with several more qualifying only in certain provinces. For the 2022 Election, voting was conducted by each voter adding a unique sticker to there first, second and third choice for the Presidential ballot and stamping there chosen party. This was to prevent from issues with voters making accidental stamps as happened famously in the 2000 Election. In total the SIEB was given a A to A+ rating for ballot distribution by the Howard Prince-Gonzalez Institution.
