Jacques Tessier (born 26 February 1974) is a Haesanite curler representing the province of Anfa as well as the Haesanite national team. He is an Olympic gold medalist and silver medalist, having won mixed doubles curling and placed runner up in men's team curling at the Hanshui 2023 Olympiad. He is also two time winner of the Seori Cup, the championship of Haesanite curling.
Career[edit | edit source]
Tessier started curling at a young age, representing his local Saint-Benoît curling club in youth competitions. While attending university in Levesque, he was recruited as part of a club team at Trois Moulins curling club, which won the Northlands regional championship and marked Tessier's first appearance in the Seori Cup championships. He went to the playoffs three times representing the Northlands including a semifinal appearance in 1998 before moving to Anfa for a variety of personal and professional reasons.
At Coeur Bleu curling club, Tessier started to make real progress as the team's vice skip, but in 2004 he became skip (team captain) and saw immediate success, making it to the 2005 Seori cup finals and losing only to the legendary Namhae team captained by Michael Smith. After Smith's retirement in 2007, in March 2008 Tessier lead Anfa to its first Seori Cup win since 1986, and then won his second national title in 2014 following a series of runner's up performances and semifinal appearances. Although domestic success has been lacking in recent years, as a result of Tessier's pedigree, sharp tactical skills, and years of experience on the curling ice, he is regularly named as captain for Team Haesan. In mixed doubles, especially, Tessier has had tremendous success on both a domestic and international level, often paired with young phenom turned national star Elodie Fontaine.
Hanshui 2023[edit | edit source]
Due to Tessier's leadership in one of Haesan's most popular sports, he was chosen to be one of Haesan's flagbearers in Hanshui, along with archer Jang Su-mi. Haesan was expected to do extremely well in curling, and Tessier's steady hand at the helm was a key reason why.
In men's team play, the Frost Demons easily dispatched Wosteaque and Grundhavn, but faced a difficult match against Astoria in the semifinals, who they narrowly beat 7-6. In the finals, they were narrowly upset 7-6 by Zongongia by an exceptional draw in the 10th end and finished with silver medals.[1]
In mixed doubles play, alongside Elodie Fontaine, the duo were virtually unstoppable. Controlling almost every match from the first few ends, every match was decided by at least 4 points, and only one of them saw a 10th end go to completion. The duo boasted a hammer efficiency of over 90% throughout the tournament, easily beating Zongongia 11-7 in the finals to win gold.[2]
At the conclusion of the 2023 Olympics, Tessier announced his retirement from the Haesanite National Team. He announced that he expects to compete and coach at a club level, but seeks to spend more time with his family.
