The Slokasian Legislature is a legislative body of the United Federation of the Slokais Islands. Their job is to pass and regulate bills and laws, as well as to call for presidential elections or to override the president. The leading parties are the Centrists,National Alliance and the Conservative Party. Seats are based on province-wide proportional representation. This is a change from the 1990s when districts were based on townships or wards[a]

Elections[edit | edit source]

Elections are held every 4 years or can occur as soon as 2 years after the last election, depending on whether an election is called by a majority vote for the Legislature at the start of a new session. In addition, a Presidential Election also occurs at the same time. An election may only be called at the start of a new session, which officially lasts from January to May and August to November. If an election is called, it must occur within a year of the date of the motion declared, with new members being sworn in at least 2 weeks after all results have been declared. Seat calculations per province are based on the closest whole number, with the number of seats nationwide being declared every 10 years and seats reapportioned at that time. The number of seats per province is updated every 5 years based on the census. So, for example, the 2026 Election will have 638 Seats, although in reality should be 652 if each member were to represent 115,000 people.

Organization[edit | edit source]

Whatever coalition has a majority of seats can have its leader become Prime Minister and appoint cabinet members. Though officially, the President of the Legislature manages daily proceedings. The President of the Legislature is usually the leader of a coalition partner, although it may be any member of the entire Legislature.

The Slokaisian Legislature is divided into 17 Ministry Committees, each headed up by a Minister corresponding with a government Ministry. In addition, there is a National Security Committee and a Rules Committee. The Ministry Committees are made up of 20 MSLs with the makeup reflecting the overall composition of the Legislature. Each political party decides its representative internally, although smaller parties may combine if they make up less than 5% of the Legislature. The National Security Committee is a higher-level committee with 12 MSLs each including the President of the Legislature and the Prime Minister. The Rules Committee is the largest committee held in the main Legislative Chamber, while other sub-committees are held. It consists of the President of the Legislature and 4 clerks chosen by the President who act as mediators to issues in the sub-committee. Every MSL may also speak for an unlimited amount and is the only committee to be broadcast live and 24/7. MPs typically use the Rules Committee as a formal meeting place or to make a speech to the public.
