The Secretary of State for Infrastructure, also known as the Secretary for Infrastructure or Infrastructure Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Infrastructure, which is tasked with the oversight of transportation, housing, and communications policy in Sanctaria. The current Infrastructure Secretary is Xander Morgan. He was appointed to the post on 01 February 2018.
The position, and the Department, has been known by a number of names since its creation in 1974. In recent years, however, the position has most commonly been referred to as the Infrastructure Secretary, with the department being colloquially referred to similarly.
Overview
The Secretary for Infrastructure is a senior advisor to the Prime Minister on matters relating to Sanctaria's transportation network, communications and telecommunications network, and housing and planning supply and regulations. Examples of areas that come under the purview of the Infrastructure include the development and maintenance of roads and motorways, the regulation of sea and air ports, and the development and implementation of house policy.
The position was originally established in 1974 as the Secretary responsible for the Department of Transport. Successive governments added housing and communications and technology portfolios to the department, resulting in various name changes and responsibilities. While many of these functions remain with the Department, in 2018 many of the responsibilities relating to technology-related communications such as broadband and internet provision was transferred to a new department; the Infrastructure department remains responsible for other telecommunications, as well as physical post services.
Duties
Duties of the Infrastructure include, but are not limited to:
- Oversight and regulation of rail and public transport services in Sanctaria.
- Responsibility for the supervision and awarding of telecommunications licences.
- Management of public sea and air ports.
- Development and implementation of national housing policy, including regular reporting to Parliament on housing units built.
- Road safety, maintenance, upgrades, and development.
