The Deputy Prime Minister of the Divine Republic, also known as the Deputy Prime Minister of Sanctaria, is the deputy head of government of Sanctaria and the second-most senior officer in the Government of Sanctaria. The Deputy Prime Minister is appointed by the President of Sanctaria on the advice of the Prime Minister. The current office holder is Niamh Winters, who was appointed on 01 February 2018.
Office
The office was created in 1974 under the Constitution of Sanctaria. It was first held by Xander Dylans of the Christian Union Party.
The Prime Minister nominates a member of the House of Deputies, who will also be a member of the government, to the office. The President of Sanctaria then appoints the nominee to the office. Unlike nominees to be Secretaries of State, the Senate does not need to confirm the Prime Minister's nominee for Deputy Prime Minister. The Deputy Prime Minister acts in place of the Prime Minister during his or her temporary absence. In the event of a Prime Minister's death of permanent incapacitation, the Deputy Prime Minister acts in their stead until another Prime Minister is appointed. The Deputy Prime Minister chairs meetings of the government in the absence of the Prime Minister, and may take questions on their behalf in either or both Houses of Parliament.
Aside from these constitutional duties, the title is largely honorific. While the Department of the Prime Minister is a government department under the Government Secretaries Acts 1974 to 2018, there is no such department for the Deputy Prime Minister; every Deputy Prime Minister has, in parallel, held a secretarial portfolio as head of a government department.
In one-party governments, the Deputy Prime Minister is, by convention, the deputy leader of the party, however the Prime Minister is free to choose whomever they wish to be Deputy Prime Minister. In coalition governments, the Deputy Prime Minister position is usually given to the leader of the second-largest government party.
