Litudinem, officially known as the City of Litudinem is the capital city and administrative hub of Libertas Omnium Maximus and the provincial seat of Passarelle. Litudinem is the second most populous city in the nation and among its oldest continuously inhabited mainland settlements, founded in 1686. Litudinem became the official capital of the Maximusian Republic in 1841 after the conclusion of the Iustitian Civil War, but previously served as a capital-in-exile for republican forces from 1837 to 1840. Most of Litudinem was centrally planned, with major expansions occurring in the 1850s and 1970s. Litudinem is a major business nexus, home to business services, startups, government contractors, and IT companies. Since the 1990s, Litudinem has been a pioneer in sustainable urban development and supports many public parks and pedestrian markets. Litudinem and the surrounding municipalities make up the Maximusian Republic's second largest metropolitan area, behind Iustitia City.
History
Litudinem was founded along the east bank of the Lyne River as a fur trapping outpost. At the time, it was adjacent to a 35,000 acre estate of unmapped wilderness given to Commodore Leroy Bohn Keller for his service in the Valahandian navy during the Illien Reef Wars, a series of antipiracy campaigns targeting privateers seizing Valahandian merchant ships. Bohn Keller, later named Count of Meine, arranged an easement with the town preceding its establishment granting residents trapping and logging rights within the estate for a nominal fee. Litudinem gradually morphed from a provincial outpost to a major lumber and fine fur exporter. At the time, however, only shallow draft watercraft could make it from settlements at the mouth of the Lyne River to Litudinem and the route remained treacherous, particularly in the waters just south of the city. To remedy this problem, a number of canals were constructed in the 18th century along the river near the city, inadvertently establishing Litudinem as the furthest upstream settlement easily accessible by boat. Over the next century, Litudinem became a major center of wealth while remaining a decidedly frontier town. From 1837 to 1840, Litudinem served as the de facto headquarters for republican forces during the Iustitian Civil War after they lost a foothold on the island of Iustitia. After republican forces prevailed in 1840, Litudinem was named the capital of the new republic.
In the late 1840s, the Invictus Quarter was constructed, a four-by-six block planned administrative center for the fledgling nation containing the Senate building, the Presidential Manor, First Courthouse (seat of the Maximusian High Court) and many other government buildings and several embassies.
