The Secretary of State for Homeland Security, also known as the Secretary for Homeland Security or the Homeland Security Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Homeland Security, which is tasked with the responsibility for national and public security of Sanctaria, as well as oversight of the Sanctarian Armed Forces. The current Secretary for Homeland Security is Kathryn Stewart, who was appointed to the post on 01 February 2018.
Prior to 2015, the Department was solely responsible for the Armed Forces and was called the Department of Defence, with the position of Secretary referred to as Secretary for Defence.
Overview
The Secretary for Homeland Security is the principal advisor to the Prime Minister on matters relating to the security and defence of Sanctaria. The Secretary is responsible for matters such as oversight of the military and the intelligence services, immigration, borders and customs control, anti-terrorism, as well as some domestic duties such as oversight of the fire and rescue services, excluding the police, and disaster management.
The position was originally formed in 1974 as the Secretary of State for Defence, heading the government department of the same name. This department was solely responsible for the Sanctarian Armed Forces and, as Sanctaria is a neutral country, was not seen as a glamorous or career-defining position to be in. In changes to government structure in 2015, responsibility for the intelligence services, immigration, border control, as well as other domestic duties were added to the Defence Secretary's purview, and the position and department were changed to Homeland Security. The position is now considered one of the most important in Government.
Duties
Duties of the Homeland Security Secretary include, but are not limited to:
- Responsibility for the Sanctarian Armed Forces.
- Oversight of the Sanctarian Intelligence Service.
- Developing and enacting government policy on immigration, including refugee and asylum policy.
- Supervision of the borders and customs agencies.
- Implementation and management of the disaster preparedness and response frameworks.
