Hey guys. My younger brother recently moved in with me, so as to begin his career playing college football, and as a Kinesiology student. Unfortunately, 2 days ago, during practice, he broke his Tibia...or shin bone. His scholarship is now up in the air, and his mobility has been reduced to little more than pulling himself across the floor.
So, anything that I have tentatively planned, or been discussing on these boards, and the NS world in general will be on hold for a few weeks.

Okay, after the sports thread, here's my proposal:
All those interested in a sports tournament can report here. If we have a reasonable amount of nations, we can start the IDU Football Championships. The nations will be divided into groups. Depending on the amount of groups, the top X will continue into the next round, all the way to the final.
I will use the benelux football tournament system, which determined the scores by ranking. You take the worldwide rankings of each nation, and strip the rankings so that both rankings have the same amount of numbers. (so if one is 134.946th, and the other 58.238th, you strip the 1 so both are 5 digits). Then, each digit is compared to the one of the other. The highest one gets a goal. If the scores draw, none gets a goal.
So, in our example:
34946 = 0 0 1 1 0 = 2
58238 = 1 1 0 0 1 = 3
so the final score is 2-3.
Points in the groups are as usual: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.
The PRoGG will host the tournament to save on flying trips accoss the IDU.
Update: We will play with national teams, not club teams!.

UN Slum Act

The NationStates UN,
ALARMED by the international growth of slums and the number of people living in slums,
NOTING WITH REGRET that a high proportion of slum inhabitants is living below the poverty line,
ACKNOWLEDGING that it will cost extremely large amounts of money to get rid of slums and provide proper housing to the inhabitants,
REALIZING that the nations with large slum areas usually lack fincancial means to tackle the problem,
EMPHASIZING that with relatively low-cost solutions, slums can be reduced,
1. URGES all UN member nations to contribute to reducing slums, either their own or by reserving financial or organisational aid for countries that need help in reducing slums,
2. NOTES that the slum inhabitants have to be made responsible for their own living area, and that governments or organisations active in slum redevelopment should incorporate community efforts,
3. SUGGESTS as possible solutions: building roads, providing fresh running water and electricity, building schools and founding work agencies to get the inhabitants to work in the formal instead of the informal economy,
4. DECLARES adequate shelter to be a fundamental right of all UN citizens.
Freedom of Science

The NationStates United Nations,
RECALLING the passing of Resolution #2: Scientific Freedom,
NOTING WITH REGRET the lack of concrete protection this resolutions provides for scientists,
ALSO NOTING that this resolution poorly defines science and scientists worthy of protection,
CONSIDERING the advantages of greater scientific freedom, such as economic prosperity, but also greater insight in how the world works, as well as possible advances in medical science,
ACKNOWLEDGING the value of religion, which however should be clearly seperate from science,
1. AFFIRMS the Freedom of Science as a fundamental right accross UN member nations,
2. DEFINES science as the system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific methods, i.e. methodically trying to falsify hypotheses based on objective experimenting which can be reproduced,
3. MANDATES that no scientist may be persecuted for conducting scientific research, publishing scientific research or reading scientific publications,
4. EXEMPTS from general UN protection from clause 3 scientific research that:
a. is acquired through methods that violate human or animal rights according to UN or national legislation;
b. is aimed at warfare or otherwise damaging persons or animals;
c. depends on "divine beings" as explanations for phenomena;
but leaves it up to individual member nations to deal with these sciences.
5. EXPRESSES ITS HOPE that through science, the lives of UN citizens will improve in the centuries to come.
With great grief I announce that the former Queen Meinara, monarch of Baranxtu from 1962-1992 and mother of our present king, Ateni, has passed away today.
The Most Serene Republic of Baranxtu's official period of grieving will last two weeks; the funeral of Her Royal Majesty has been scheduled for coming Friday, August 26th.
The republic invites all prime ministers, presidents, chancellors, monarchs and other heads of state from the IDU to her funeral, which is to be held in the capital.
The Malabrian Times, Malabra's first national newspaper, is now online. It contains topics regarding anything from sports to the IDU. It is free for viewers online and is located at: http://www.malabriantimes.blogspot.com . This is the English version. We hope IDU members will check it out. 
I thought today that a good UN proposal would be Advertising Standards, so far I've thought of a few things for this proposal to cover:
1. Banning false advertising
2. On TV, speaking the price of the item instead of having it in fine print, and also speaking side effects of prescription drugs, etc.
3. Possibly making a limit of how small fine print can be so that the average person can read it?
If you can think of more topics this should cover or suggestions about those topics, let me know. Once I know the topics to cover I'll write a draft.
With great woe I have to tell you that Baranxtu's former queen Meinara Libalatu Ggura-Eilara has been hospitalized today, having suffered a stroke in the late afternoon.
Her state of health is critical, and it is doubtful wether she will survive.
People all over Baranxtu are flocking to the temples and shrines, praying to Baranxi, the god of life and death and patron of Baranxtu, to spare queen Meinara, and to M??ggi, the god of health, to heal the ailing queen; and also to ??iscar, the god of death, to grant her an easy passing if she should not recover.
(And only for your reassurance: this is all only gameplay, nothing bad has happened to me or my loved ones, knock-on-wood.)
