  labeling precedent

The esteemed representative from Groot Gouda invited the people of Lazy days to post a draft resolution they feel follows the precedence furthered by the overwhelming vote for international labeling standards. This is not a drug legalization issue because it does not decriminalize or legalize drugs, and, to the best of our knowledge, it does not seem to be addressed by the universal declaration of rights or any other human rights proposal already passed by the UN.

Therefore:

"Freedom For All"

A Draft Proposal to Increase Worldwide Human and Civil Rights

Strength: Strong

Article I: The United Nations hereby recognizes the universal human right to be free.

Article II: Every country has a right to incarcerate individuals who harm other people or the state itself.

Article III: However, many nations incarcerate people for harm they inflict on themselves by using drugs.

Article IV: Therefore, no nation may incarcerate someone for the growth, possession, transport, distribution, or use of recreational or medicinal drugs.

Article V: No nation may extradite or otherwise transfer a person charged with a crime listed under Article IV to another nation whose laws allow for incarceration for the offense.

Article VI: Nothing in this resolution affects the legality of drugs in member nations. It only affects the punishments which nations may apply for drug-related offenses.


As this is a draft that has reached my office through the cooperation of several human rights groups, we would be grateful for the feedback of the IDU.

Also, I will offer thoughts on the most likely objections:

1) "Using drugs is wrong" It is more wrong to deprive people of their freedom. This is a fundamental right, upon which other rights depend. Also, incarceration does not have much of an effect on drug use. Even in prisons, drugs are widely available. Finally, citizens should not be subject to the arbitrary whims of which drugs are wrong.

2) "Telling leaders how to run their country is wrong" It has become clear to Lazy days that the international community completely rejects this principle. The people of Lazy days would prefer to work within that framework and would in fact support the repeal efforts necessary to realize that vision of international relations. Until then, human rights clearly reign supreme.

3) "Drugs make people do bad things" This resolution explicitly allows for the incarceration of people who do bad things. People who do not do bad things should not be deprived of their freedom simply because a few people who use drugs also do bad things.

Again, the people of Lazy days thank you for this opportunity to hear feedback on a fundamental human right.

Greetings to the International Democratic Union,

I have been directed by your region's UN Delegate, Grosseschnauzer, to come to this forum with my request.

I am in the process of submitting a proposal to repeal the Sex Education Act. It will be posted soon for delegate approval, and for your region to review and deem if it is suitable for support.

I ask for the assistance of the IDU in making this repeal successful, for it would be a great victory for those who would like to see the UN focus on where it works best: on international dialogue, peace, and humanitarianism.

I humbly request the Delegate's consideration on this matter.

Description: UN Resolution #122: Promotion of Solar Panels (Category: Environmental; Industry Affected: All Businesses) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument:
Let it primarily be noted that the original creator of this resolution, Starcra II, in his own words, has admitted to his resolution having faults and was previously aware of the repeal. He encourages nations to support this repeal as he is writing up a newer, better version of the resolution which will be up for debate before submission to the UN.

This repeal does not condemn solar panels, and the United Nations acknowledges that this resolution is well intentioned, but:

-A- The mandatory objective to ban fossil fuels use in ten years is unrealistic, due to it entailing:
- Too short a timescale for the phasing out of fossil fuels
- Too great a fiscal expense of environmentally-conscious replacements and the introduction of said replacement s
- Too much consumption of resources and of fossil fuels themselves for the materials and processes required for the manufacture of more environmentally-conscious alternatives
- An unforeseen and accidental hindering of many fossil fuel reliant economic sectors such as the aeronautical and airlines sector.
- An impact on power supplies, thus reducing the productive outputs of industries extracting, processing and modifying further resources to make the products that are taken for granted in maintaining our quality of life. This may involve the processing and packaging of foodstuffs, medicines, water and other supplies used in aid programs and our daily lives.

-B- This resolution's requirements will destroy many economies in next 10 years due to the costs of extracting, obtaining and processing the resources required, as mentioned in Section A, and the costs of the economy recovering to the level it was at before the fossil fuel ban would have to come out of already nearly depleted treasuries.

-C- As some nations receive little sunlight each year and many new/clean/renewable sources of energy are available, the nations must be to allowed to decide between these choices, some of which are more suited to their climates and geography, in order to decrease their use of fossil fuels, whilst maintaining the economic viability and practicality of the replacements.

-D- This resolution falsely states that the combustion of fossil fuels results in holes in the Ozone layer, and while the UN accepts that they theoretically assist the Greenhouse Effect and are aware of its implications, this error must be removed to prevent the misinforming of member states.

The United Nations,

PLEASED by the environmental concerns of the original proposal and its promotion of renewable energy source, but

REGRETTING the aforementioned shortcomings,

REPEALS Resolution #122 - "Promotion of Solar Panels".

I received a TG today from Lazy Days about their proposal. My standard reaction is to direct people here to the forum for comments and assistance. I'd like to count on your help, and would once again like to propose to all UN members to encourage non-IDU nations to discuss their resolution proposals on this forum.

So if you notice someone has a good proposal, get them over here so we can help them getting it on the floor and accepted by the UN majority.

I received a telegram from The United Republics of Baudrillard requesting that our UN delegate (Grosseschauzer right now right?) consider his proposal, the UN Membership Dues Act, since he voted for my Labeling Standards resolution. You don't have to vote for it, but here it is:

Quote: UNDERSTANDING that the United Nations is an organization of voluntary member states,

AND that while the United Nations is not a government onto itself, it has been charged with the execution of committees and the implementation of acts,

REQUESTS, in order to enforce the resolutions passed by the member states, that the United Nations be authorized to collect dues from each member nation and in doing so,

LEGISLATES the following:

(1) That the United Nations be allowed to collect dues of membership once annually,

(2) That such dues will not exceed one-quarter of one percent (or 0.25%) of the taxes collected by member states annually,

(2a) That such dues will not be pro-rated so that member states with larger economies unnecessarily carry the burden for the majority of membership dues,

And FURTHER requiring,

(3) That the United Nations must remit any fiscal surplus derived from membership dues in proportion to the amount of membership dues payed in by member states, and

(4) Therefore, the United Nations cannot use any surplus to the particular advantage or disadvantage of any member state, and finally

(5) Requires that the United Nations annually display publicly to all nations its accounting process to insure transparency of collection of membership dues and their expenditure.

So that from the collection of membership dues, GUARANTEES that the United Nations is truly capable to carry out the missions assigned to it by the member states.[/quote]

I really haven't been active in this region really. I have been reading and looking around in the forums, but I've mostly played behind the scenes. Even when a close friend and family member, Randomerica was a large part in this region I didn't do much. But I guess today is any good a day to start a little bit of posting.

I've looked around the forums and have noticed no one has ever mentioned anything about space exploration. My nation for one is very interested in the vast reaches of space and wonder if anyone else in the IDU shares the same feelings. Have you ever sent anything into orbit? Has anyone from your nation ever gone into space? Have you planned explorations to other planets? Please, tell!
