The Natural Community of Yesteria is an island nation in the Southern Ocean off the coast of Neria near Salad Land. Yesteria is known for its primitivist policies, which bans any non-medical technology invented since 1760 from being brought onto either of the two islands comprising the nation. An exception was built into the policy for medical technology only in 2005. Despite these restrictions, it is possible to freely enter and leave Yesteria as an individual - although the only permitted transport method to the nation is a ship using solely sails and/or oars.
History[edit | edit source]
Yesteria has its origins as a fishing community, living primarily on seafood found surrounding the islands. While Yesteria is technically made of two islands, the gap between both is small enough for an individual to wade across at low tide. Yesteria has never been colonised, but it is believed that numerous groups have become shipwrecked in the area through the centuries, mixing into the local population.
Industrial revolution and peasant revolt[edit | edit source]
During the early stages of the industrial revolution, groups of Yesterian peasants fearing for their livelihood, staged a successful revolt in 1779, destroying the emergent capitalist class and their machines. The peasants marched on then-capital Vasiliki Poli, overthrowing the hereditary monarchy. All members of the royal family were either killed or fled. Those behind the revolt then chose to ban all technology invented from that point on in order to prevent industrialisation. For several decades, most governance was done solely at a local level, before the country began to elect new monarchs, who would serve for life or until abdication.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The northern island of Yesteria, known locally as Ta Agroktímata (The Farms) is comprised primarily of agricultural land, and produces 97.4% of the nation's land-based food products, alongside most clothing products. The southern island, known locally as To Dásos (The Forest) is almost entirely forested, with strict conservation of the woodland taking place, enforced by the local population. About half of the population of To Dásos live as hunter-gatherers, while the other half import food from the northern island, or fish.
Government[edit | edit source]
Yesteria is a confederal elective monarchy. The majority of decisions are made at a very local level; by settlement or collections of disparate farms, organised locally. For those decisions made at a national level, the United Council of Yesteria meets, comprised of one representative from each local community. Communities choose how to select representatives themselves; and the number of communities can change from year-to-year. The United Council elects a First Minister every five years. The First Minister can be any individual, even if they are not a member of the Council. After their election they convene the Council.
The monarch, titled Prince or Princess, is elected by popular vote for life. Following the death of a monarch, a new election is held. Until 2000, only individuals owning a certain minimum amount of land, and holding a noble title, were permitted to stand for election, however in 2000 this was widened to include any adult - although only one election has taken place since, and was won by a wealthy landowner.
