Jarantasiri is the second most populous city in Pharitaya and is the seat of regional government for Chaifang Province. As of 2021, it had a population of 2,770,984. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Haesan, Jarantasiri has been a regional center for commerce since its establishment in the 8th century. During both the Haesanite and Opthelian colonial periods, Jarantasiri was a seat of government institutions, and it has been widely regarded as Pharitaya's "second city" since the mid 19th century. Jarantasiri was transformed in the late 20th century by the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves offshore in the Pharitayan Exclusive Economic Zone, and has since become a major center for refining and exporting petroleum products and fuels. Jarantasiri is the traditional homeland of the Coastal Tae people and is home to a significant number of historical cultural sites.

Climate and Geography[edit | edit source]

Jarantasiri is located on the southern coast of the Chalermphrakiat Peninsula, where the Jaranta River meets the Gulf of Haesan. It has sandy beaches along most of its urban coastline, and beach sizes have expanded due to government sponsored sand dredging programs designed to increase tourism. Jarantasiri has hot, humid, monsoonal summers and cool humid winters. In summer months, it is particularly rainy, as fronts get trapped between the coast and the foothills that extend through much of western Pharitaya. While historically, the region has been a fishing hotspot, in recent years migration patterns have been affected by industrial activity and catches have thinned.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Jarantasiri's economy is primarily centered around the refining and exporting of petroleum. While only the third largest port in terms of overall volume in Pharitaya, the Port of Jarantasiri exports the most crude oil and other fuel products of any port in the nation. Historically, Jarantasiri has been a center of silk weaving, due to its proximity to silk farms in the country's western foothills. Jarantasiri remains logistically important for both maritime and rail travel, serving as a major stop over on the Puri Rimbawan to Saikane high speed rail line. Jarantasiri is served by a system of electric trams, which have become iconic to the city due to their vibrant color scheme.
