The Golden Blade Insurgency is an ongoing domestic conflict in Huenya between government forces and a terrorist organisation calling themselves the Golden Blade, with the latter being supported by Xiomera.

Background

Following the conclusion of the Second Xiomeran Civil War and the resulting partition, Xiomera and Huenya remained at odds with each other.

2021 terrorist attacks

Intelligence HQ

The first attack by the Golden Blade took place on July 6, 2021; when Huenya's intelligence headquarters were bombed by the group.

August attacks

On August 11, a series of terrorist attacks happened across Huenya. The targets of these attacks included a nightclub, a construction site, the outside of a government office, and an army convoy. The Golden Blade terrorist organisation claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that they were "declaring war" on the government of Huenya.

The attacks prompted Huenyans to organise a "Day Without Fear", where 600,000 Huenyans protested against the Golden Blade and their actions within the country.

September attacks

On September 12, a series of further terrorist attacks occurred across Huenya, targeting Huenyan leaders. This resulted in the death of two Unification Party candidates, one judge, a police commander, a Huenyan general, and a mayor.

On September 22, nantzintli Yauhmi's Xomaxtli Hill estate was the victim of a further attack.

After these attacks, Great Speaker Texōccoatl announced that Huenya would be ramping up recruitment for the new Civil Guard and the intelligence service, as well as increasing powers of arrest and questioning to the Civil Guard for individuals suspected of terrorism. Numerous individuals were detained and questioned following the decision.

Election attacks

Several days before the primary election day, a polling station was targeted by the Golden Blade during early voting. One poll worker, Matzinena, was taken captive, with five others killed - alongside police officers and soldiers.

On election day, further attacks took place, with both terrorists and voters being killed. A foreign election observer, Paul Ramirez, from Lauchenoiria was also taken captive by the terrorist organisation during these attacks. Several weeks later, Golden Blade terrorists provided the Huenyan government with a ransom video of Ramirez and Matzinena, demanding that Huenya grants the "State of Apozanolotl" independence.

Anti-Terrorist Mission

On January 26th, 2022, Huenya launched a full anti-terrorist operation including not only federal police, but military units. Lauchenoiria also sent a number of anti-terrorism specialists to Huenya to assist in the operation, and the rescue of Ramirez. After a series of raids on the Golden Blade, one hostage - Matzinena - was killed.

By mid-February, the operation, which had initially had some success, began rapidly losing ground, prompting the Huenyan legislature to approve further operations against the terrorist group.

Ramirez was later released, with Prime Minister Josephine Alvarez of Lauchenoiria accused of making a secret deal with Xiomera to secure his release, possibly for Lauchenoiria to withdraw from the Aurian blockade.

Annexation of Territory

State of Apozanolotl

By February 14th, the Golden Blade had managed to take control of a considerable amount of territory centred on the city of Xonacatlán in southeastern Huenya. The terrorists formed a competing government, claiming their territory as an independent "State of Apozanolotl". After the declaration, the territory held by the group continued to expand as Huenyan forces failed to halt their advance. By April 24, the new "State of Apozanolotl" sought recognition as an independent country, receiving it from Xiomera.

Annexation by Xiomera

In late April 2023, Xiomera formally annexed "Western Xiomera", classing it as the thirteenth home province of Xiomera. This was roundly condemned by multiple countries, including Lauchenoiria.

Renewed attacks 2023

Assassination of Tiacihitli

On August 24th, both Great Speaker Texōccoatl and Vice-Speaker Tiacihitli fell ill after eating dinner. It was later revealed that both Huenyan leaders had been poisoned with a rare, deadly Xiomeran poison. On August 26th, the Vice Speaker passed from cardiac arrest.

Further insurgency

Very shortly after the poisoning of both Huenyan leaders, the Golden Blade led a further insurgency in multiple locations across Huenya. After the death of Tiacihitli, Great Speaker Texōccoatl appointed Xiadani as interim Vice-Speaker. This was later approved by the legislature, after which Xiadani stated that Golden Blade had 48 hours to lay down their arms before Huenya would begin retaliatory strikes.

Attack on Chuaztlapoc

On [date], the Golden Blade began to attack the Huenyan capital of Chuaztlapoc. During this attack, numerous staff from the embassy of Greater Acadia were taken hostage, with the Lauchenoirian, Eirian and Sansongian embassies also coming under attack. The Xomaxtli Hill estate of Yauhmi was also assaulted and burned to the ground, though Yauhmi managed to escape.

Xiomeran funding

There is a considerable body of evidence that Xiomera has been funding the Golden Blade from before their first attack. Prime Minister Alvarez of Lauchenoiria also later revealed that she had indeed made a deal with Xiomera for the release of election observer Paul Ramirez, taken hostage by the Golden Blade, citing this among evidence that Xiomera had control over the actions of the Golden Blade while reversing her decision to pull out of Auria.
