Christopher Argo is a Maximusian statesman and former-Chancellor who founded the Spirit of 1837 in 2004, breaking away from the National Conservative Party. During his decade-spanning stint as an assemblymen (1989-2001) from Scapardie, he gained a reputation for his fiery and acerbic rhetoric, his hardline stances on fiscal policy, and his willingness to feud with political adversaries, including rivals within his own party. After a successful recall vote against the incumbent Chancellor in 1997, Argo was able to assume the Chancellorship, backed by Conservative allies and the neoliberal wing of the Progressives. During his tenure as Chancellor, Argo worked to balance the Maximusian budget and renegotiate a number of international trade agreements. After the Conservatives were roundly defeated in the 2000 general legislative election, Argo took much of the blame for allowing (and often instigating) infighting within the party, which was highly publicized during the election season. After losing the Chancellorship in 2001, Argo left the Conservative party and resigned his seat on the General Assembly, citing general political disillusionment. He went on to found Spirit of 1837 as a more socially liberal, economically conservative alternative to the NCP, but never again pursued office, instead serving as the party's chairman from 2004 until 2009. He now occupies a permanent seat on the steering committee, but has largely retired from public life.
