An Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Sanctaria is an ordinary judge of the Supreme Court of Sanctaria, and a senior position within the country's judicial system. One of the highest-ranking judges in the land, an associate justice plays a vital role in interpreting and upholding the constitution and ensuring the fair and just application of the law.
Eight associate justices serve on the Supreme Court, alongside the Chief Justice of Sanctaria. The Supreme Court sits en banc with each justice seated in order of their seniority. Seniority is determined by length of service on the court[a]; the Chief Justice, regardless of length of service, is always considered the most senior justice. When the position of Chief Justice is vacant, or the Chief Justice is unable to participate in a case, the most senior serving associate justice takes on the duties of the role in an acting manner.
Appointed by the President of Sanctaria, on the nomination of the government with the advice and consent of the Senate, the role of an associate justice is to carefully analyse legal arguments, review evidence, and consider the precedents set by previous court decisions. They participate in rigorous debates and deliberations with their fellow justices to reach well-reasoned and legally sound judgments. Their decisions have a lasting impact on the interpretation of laws and the protection of individual rights and freedoms in Sanctaria.
Typically be appointed as an associate justice, individuals must possess exceptional legal knowledge, expertise, and a proven record of integrity and impartiality. They are generally experienced jurists who have served on lower federal courts, or on state courts, and who have demonstrated excellence in their legal careers.
