The 2016 International Democratic Union Film Festival was the first iteration of the event, held in Suddery, Nova Sodor in October of 2016. The event was established to honor IDU cinema, and bring together the nations of the region to celebrate the art of film. The event was held entirely on the premises of The Gordon Hotel. During the festival, delegations from five nations within the IDU, and two foreign nations, submitted entries, and a committee of national delegates voted on winners in three categories.
Little was known about the voting process at the time, as it took place amongst the delegates in the closed back rooms of The Gordon, and no formal trophy presentation occurred. Much of what we know about the event comes from a PhD dissertation by the Haesanite Seohae University historiography student Yeong Chi-hong. Yeong conducted interviews of many of the delegates present, scoured the Sodor Film Association and The Gordon for any archival materials, and sought to recreate the inner workings of the event to the greatest extent possible. The only conclusive decision given at the time was that Bearren and Lursienne was the winner, given the fact that Bears Armed was given the rights to host the second event, starting a tradition that continues to this day. It is also presumed that the Laeralian film The Society of the Red Rose won best Classic Film, since it was unopposed in the category.
Best New IDU Film[edit | edit source]
The category 'Best New IDU Film' is the most prestigious of the awards presented at the IDU Film Festival, and the nation which submitted the winner of the category becomes the next host nation of the Festival. The award recognizes the best overall IDU film released during the year of 2016. Four entries were submitted in this category. The submissions, and the number of votes each garnered, are shown below.
- About A Souffl? —
Gnejs - Defenders of Kamchatka —
Trive (1)[a] - The Tale of Bearren and Lursienne —
Bears Armed (4)[a] - Thirty Six Percent — Nova Sodor
Best IDU Classic Film[edit | edit source]
This category honors the best IDU films released prior to 2012. The Society of the Red Rose was the lone entrant in this category.
- The Society of the Red Rose —
Laeral (by acclamation)
Best Foreign Film[edit | edit source]
This category, honors the best film produced in 2016 outside of the IDU. There were two entries in this category.
- A Dog in the Wolf's Lair — Westerheim (3)[b]
- Outside the Lines — Zwangzug (2)
Notes[edit | edit source]
- ↑ a b It is unclear whether nations were allowed to vote for their own submissions. Yeong has documentation from a Sodorian film board prohibiting Nova Sodor from voting for their own film,[1] but other nations, such as Gnejs, were seemingly unaware of this directive.[2] Yeong believes that it was a Nova Sodor specific requirement, and as such, self-votes are counted in the tally.
- ↑ Trive was the swing vote, and it is believed that they voted for this film. All that stands in the record is a reference to preferring "the one with that farmer,"[3] believed to be about A Dog in the Wolf's Lair.
