The Special Reconnaissance Force (SRF) is a special forces regiment of the Maximusian Army trained to carry out covert reconnaissance, small-scale raids, sabotage, and counter-terrorist operations in wartime. Active since the Great War, the SRF is considered one of the most elite regiments in the Maximusian armed forces and gained considerable recognition for their brutal efficiency while deployed in Bjeorg in 1991.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1963, in the months leading up to the November invasion of Costa regime occupied Haesan, the Maximusian Army Office of Special Operations (OSO) made the decision to consolidate a number of extant airborne commando groups under a unified command structure, SRF-I. Special Reconnaissance Force fireteams proved instrumental in identifying, and clearing or sabotaging defensive installations ahead of the main invasion force during the liberation of the Southern Maritimes. As the great war progressed, special operations played an increasingly significant role in the Maximusian battle strategy, leading to the introduction of a second battalion, SRF-II, specializing in direct action missions.
In the years after the war, SRF units were primarily deployed to address high-risk humanitarian situations, counter narcotics operations, and barricaded suspect/hostage crises. In the latter situations, the regiment developed a reputation for utilizing extremely aggressive tactics to end sieges, sometimes resulting in hostage deaths, in pursuit of a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorists. During the highly publicized 1979 on-tarmac hijacking of a IUSAIR commercial airliner, an SRF sharpshooter shot through a hostage to hit one of the perpetrators, resulting in both individuals' deaths. Since the incident, which saw the publication of the shooter's personal information by journalists, all SRF operators on domestic assignment have been required to obscure their identity, usually by wearing balaclavas, ballistic or gas masks, or bandanas, earning the group the ominous nickname, "the Black Bandanas."
Since the 1990s, the Special Reconnaissance Force has seen increasing use in its original capacity as an unconventional warfare group, seeing deployment in the Bjeorg Crisis in 1991, the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War in 2018, and the War in Vulkaria in 2020.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The Special Reconnaissance Force is organized into five battalions: I, II, III, IV, and V. Of these, SRF-III is designated for hostage rescue and asset extraction, while the other four battalions are more broadly tasked with direct action and unconventional warfare operations. All five groups are beholden to the OSO and share common recruitment and training processes. SRF is known for its extremely strict eligibility requirements, with the highest physical standards in the Maximusian Army and requiring intellectual and psychological evaluations prior to recruitment.
Controversy[edit | edit source]
In 2019, the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War Truth and Reconciliation Commission cited the Maximusian Special Reconnaissance Force present during the Second Battle of Carville with deliberately slaying medical officers, endangering civilians, and using excessive force during the assault. SRF has denied these allegations vehemently, maintaining that the only medical officials who died in the fighting were armed combat medics actively resisting the Maximusian assault, which does not constitute a war crime. SRF did not deny their use of mortar launchers during the assault.
