Independent Socialists is a parliamentary grouping in Aredoa. It is not a formal political party but rather a technical group formed by the three independents elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the 2023 Aredoan General Election. The week after its formation, two independent members of the Chamber of Regions joined the Independent Socialists, giving the grouping formal status in both chambers of the National Assembly.
The group exercises collective leadership, with its members meeting weekly. However, according to parliamentary procedure, the group was required to nominate a Floor Leader in the Chamber of Deputies. They nominated Deputy Fernando Sintes, the former Mayor of Atlozano, for the role. The group does not have a formal whip, but it is common for all five members to vote the same way on any given matter. The group regularly publishes press releases, indicating the unanimous stance of its members on a wide range of topics.
History[edit | edit source]
Independent Socialists was formed on November 19th 2023, after the 2023 General Election that saw three socialist independent candidates elected to the Chamber of Deputies. The group was formed to "strengthen the socialist voice in the National Assembly", largely due to the benefits that come with formal status such as increased floor time and improved committee opportunities. The Independent Socialists managed to secure the Vice Chairship of the Foreign Affairs Committee, seen as a major coup for the group.
On the 23rd of November, the group's members were sworn in as Deputies of the National Assembly and nominated Fernando Sintes as their Floor Leader. The following day, two independent members of the Chamber of Regions joined the group.
