The UNL University System is a collection of 12 public universities founded in 1975, with the University of New Liverpool and Howard Prince-Gonzalez University, and Newport College. The intended goal of the university system as stated by its first President Jacob Herman was to "ensure every student can pursue any degree at a public institution". Each university within the current system is publicly funded although the University of New Liverpool costs between 100,000 and 150,000 SM per semester with regional UNL campuses being free if a student archives 1400 on the National Collegiate Exam or qualifies for federal aid programs.

History[edit | edit source]

The University of New Liverpool has existed since 1858, and upon its founding was the first public university in Slokais with its campus in the dense Market Road district. In 1897, UNL moved into a new land grant in what was then rural countryside. UNL remained one of the premier public universities despite the opening of new provincial public institutions. Additionally, UNL began its partnership with Howard-Prince Gonzalez in 1920, with HPGU becoming a post-graduate institution. In the aftermath of the Great War, a political priority of rebuilding was improving public education standards, in the 1974 Election, the National Unity Platform made establishing a national college system part of their election platform. In 1975, the UNL University System was established with former Minister of Education Jacob Herman being made President of the UNL System via appointment. The goal of the UNL System was create an educated labor force in a diverse range of fields. At the time, there where few area-specific universities that where public thus limiting access. In addition to access, the Charter of the UNL states that "education been provided in some form to all students who meet minimum benchmarks" The first university to open was UNL Victoria City in 1975, also being the first of the regional university model. During the 1980s and 90s, new colleges were built such as Henry Lam College and UNL Outer Islands. The most recent addition is Alejandro Vasquez School, although it has existed since 1804, the school has only been part of the UNL System since 2015.

Admissions[edit | edit source]

Almost every UNL System school utilizes the National Admissions Portal (NAP). The only exceptions are the Alejandro Vasquez School where prospective students must pass a 8-week pre-college program and UNL University of Fine Arts which uses a combination of interviews and portfolio reviews. In terms of rigor, HPGU remains the most selective with a 6.1% acceptance rate, and typically sees the highest academic performers apply. The University of New Liverpool has the largest number of applications per year, thus acceptance rates have been declining for the past 20 years to keep student populations down. However, those rejected from UNL New Liverpool may be accepted as a transfer and be required to complete 2 years at a regional university. Overall, the UNL System uses a combination of National Collegiate Exam scores, grades received through the NAP, and personal recommendations. The UNL System has been criticized for underrepresenting Kaijanese and Indigenous students, especially at elite schools such as HPGU, controversially the UNL system has directed member schools to not engage in equity-based admissions. The admissions process has been criticized for favoring those from wealthy backgrounds, as the NCEs may not be paid for by specific schools, additionally, rural students are at a disadvantage as they don't have access to certain honor classes available to students at larger schools.

Tuition[edit | edit source]

As mandated by law, tuition at all UNL Regional institutions must be within 100,000 to 150,000 SM[a] per academic year. Tuition at subject-specific universities is flexible with Henry Lam having a market tuition of 500,000 SM per year the highest in the entire UNL system. Tuition is paid via the National Common Registration System (NCRS), tuition is free if the student is under the National Poverty Line or a veteran. Scholarships can also be given both internally and externally via grants and private donors.

Organization[edit | edit source]

The UNL system is designed into two types of institutions. First are the regional and national schools these include the University of New Liverpool as well as the 4 regional universities, Kaijan, Victoria City, Southern, and Outer Island's. In addition, the UNL system has an agreement with provincial colleges such as the University of North-Acadia, these consist of shared research and major-specific programs to study at the national level and major-specific programs to study at a provincial college. The second type of institution is a subject-specific institution, these focus on a specific field such as San Jose Poly being Engineering and Techincal specific, or Newport College being STEM specific.

Rivalries[edit | edit source]

Southland River Rivarly[edit | edit source]

Contested between HPGU and Henry Lam College, both are often ranked within the top 10 universities for academics and thus their rivalry is both athletic and academic. Their rivalry began before Henry Lam existed, as there was opposition to the college being built just across the Southland River, as the college's modern design conflicted with the closed historic campus of HPGU. Today the campuses sit just over a kilometer apart. Much of the rivalry between the schools consists of increasingly elaborate pranks. For example in 2014, HPGU students discovered a colony of hawks living within the library stacks of Tanner Hall. Although both are considered sub-par athletically, the yearly drywall ball match between the two is considered a classic.

The S-12 Rivarly[edit | edit source]

Contested between UNL Victoria City and Newport College, both campuses are located 70 miles away along the S-12 highway that follows the southern coast of San Fernando Island. The rivalry began in the 1980s when Victoria City won the National Drywall Ball Championship over Newport on a controversial play. In response, Newport fans bought a billboard on the S-12 Highway saying "Victoria Cheated, Newport still undefeated" about the team being undefeated until that game. Although both schools have fallen behind in Drywall Ball in recent years the games between the teams remain fierce. In addition, Victoria City fans characterize Newport as being a bunch of "rich nerds" or "Nerdes Ricos" while Newport fans characterize Victoria City fans as "cousin sexer's".

Athletics[edit | edit source]

As well as being an academic system, the UNL system has its own athletic conference. In fact, the schools of the UNL system were the first places where drywall ball was adopted. Currently, the University of New Liverpool remains the most successful drywall ball team with over 14 National Championships. Other sports include football, basketball, and baseball. Another popular event is competitive debate, which is specific to the collegiate level, and the best programs are HPGU and San Jose Poly frequently contest with private colleges such as San Fernando College and Reiterland.
