The Sanctarian Federal Police (SFP) is the national and principal federal law enforcement agency of the Sanctarian Government with the unique role of investigating crime and protecting the national security of the Divine Federation of Sanctaria. The SFP is an independent agency of the Department of Justice and is responsible to the Secretary of State for Justice and accountable to the Federal Parliament of Sanctaria. The police force was established in January 2020, succeeding the Sanctarian Police Force. The current Commissioner of the Sanctarian Federal Police is Henry Wallace, who was formerly the Deputy Commissioner of the force.
The SFP has responsibility for preventing, investigating and disrupting transnational, serious, complex and organised crime including terrorism and violent extremism, cybercrime, child exploitation, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. In addition, it also has some functions related to the protection of high profile individuals such as the President, Chancellor, and other members of the Government. The SFP also supplies officers on secondment to the Sanctarian Border and Customs Authority which works on border policing and customs protection.
History[edit | edit source]
Oversight[edit | edit source]
The Secretary of State for Justice is responsible for the governance and oversight of the Sanctarian Police Force. Parliamentary scrutiny also exists with both the House of Deputies' and the Senate's Select Committees on Justice responsible for probing actions and governance of the SFP.
Separately, the Federal Ombudsman and Inspectorate of Policing is charged with investigating issues related to allegations of corruption, malpractice, and maladministration in all police forces across Sanctaria. It is also required to regularly assess and report on efficiency and the effectiveness of the police forces in Sanctaria.
Organisation and functions[edit | edit source]
The SFP's role is to enforce federal law in Sanctaria, contribute to combating complex, transnational, serious and organised crime impacting Sanctaria's national security, and to protect Sanctarian interests from criminal activity domestically and, in cooperation with the Sanctarian Intelligence Service, overseas.
The SFP is responsible to the Secretary of State for Justice. Key priorities are set by the Justice Secretary. Areas of operational emphasis include:
- investigating complex, transnational, serious and organised crime
- protecting Sanctarians and Sanctarian interests from terrorism and violent extremism
- representing Sanctarian police and law enforcement on an international level
Continued responsibilities include providing:
- a national protection capability to ensure the protection of specific individuals, establishments and events identified by the Sanctarian Government as being at risk
- a national counter-terrorism first response capability focused on aviation security and protection of critical infrastructure
- providing transportation security at international airports and on Sanctarian railways, as well as acting as sky marshals when required
There are SFP stations and headquarters in each state, and though primary policing functions within each state for normal crimes and criminal investigation are the responsibility of each state police force, the SFP does retain primary jurisdiction for some crimes that have been designated "federal crimes"; these include, but are not limited to:
- Major fraud
- Child sexual abuse
- Abduction
- Drug and human trafficking
- Cyber crimes
- Counter terrorism, and terrorism prevention and investigation
- Organised crime
The SFP may also be requested to support and reinforce state police when necessary. State police forces may also request the SFP to take over or participate in investigations of crimes not usually designated a federal crime if they believe it to be in the best interests of the investigation.
