Jarantasiri is the second most populous city in Pharitaya and is the seat of regional government for Chaifang Province. As of 2021, it had a population of 2,770,984. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Haesan, Jarantasiri has been a regional center for commerce since its establishment in the 8th century. During both the Haesanite and Opthelian colonial periods, Jarantasiri was a seat of government institutions, and it has been widely regarded as Pharitaya's "second city" since the mid 19th century. Jarantasiri was transformed in the late 20th century by the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves offshore in the Pharitayan Exclusive Economic Zone, and has since become a major center for refining and exporting petroleum products and fuels. Jarantasiri is the traditional homeland of the Coastal Tae people and is home to a significant number of historical cultural sites.
