The Fédération Laéralienne du Travail-Ouvriers Industriels Unis (FLT-OIU) (English: Laeralian Labor Federation-United Industrial Workers) is a Laeralian labor union federation, the largest in Laeral. It was created by the unification of its two predecessor unions, the FLT and the OIU, in 1957. While the FLT was created during the period of single-party rule to unite organized labor under the state's supervision, the OIU was a relatively independent organization. Today, the FLT-OIU is made up of nearly 40 national unions,[a] encompassing an estimated 18 million members employed in fields from manufacturing to hospitality. The FLT-OIU is a major backer of left-of-center political parties and politicians, and takes part in substantial lobbying efforts for pro-labor policies, as well as a substantial number of technical and material assistance programs to organized labor abroad through its International Solidarity Center. Although the FLT-OIU was briefly rivalled by the breakaway Fédération Centrale du Travail Laéralien (Central Federation of Laeralian Labor) during the 1970s and 1980s, its sole rival in the present day is the communist-aligned Assemblée Syndicale de Toute la Laeral (All-Laeral Labor Assembly), which it outweighs in terms of membership by roughly a factor of three.[b] It is led by an elected President.
Notes
- ↑ The FLT-OIU formerly included unions particular to Lienne and Xueyan as well, but these have since been incorporated into national unions.
- ↑ Despite this disparity in numbers, the ASTL is dominant over the FLT-OIU in fields such as agriculture, alcoholic beverages, and sex work. Coupled with the FLT-OIU's longstanding involvement in foreign affairs, this has produced the quip summarizing the difference between the two union federations as "FLT-OIU sends missionaries; ASTL does missionary."
