Caitlin Mackintosh (born 28th August 1970) is the current Prime Minister of Glanainn. She was elected following the 2020 Glannish Election, after her predecessor Alasdair MacGowan chose to retire. Mackintosh is the leader of the Fairer Horizons Coalition, an electoral alliance of a number of Glannish political parties ranging from centre-left to centrist. Prior to her involvement with the centre-left coalition, she was an independent politician who was widely respected in her home in the south of the country.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Mackintosh was born in Kinmere, an isolated mountain village in the far south of Glanainn. She was the sixth of nine children; and her parents were both farmers. At school, she showed an aptitude for public speaking and organisational skills, and quickly became involved in local politics in Deasaig, the city where she attended secondary school as a boarding pupil due to the distance from her home village. After graduation, she received a scholarship to attend Dustraigh University on the coast of Glanainn, while her siblings returned home to the farm.
Political career[edit | edit source]
While in her final year of university, Mackintosh was elected to Dustraigh City Council, and began her role as a local Councillor immediately after graduation. Mackintosh was popular among locals, and was re-elected in the subsequent three elections despite being an independent. In her third and fourth terms on the City Council, she joined the local administration; and led it for her final three years on the Council.
She was approached by the Fairer Horizons Coalition in 2010 and began to work for the group as a national spokesperson. In 2013, she was elected to Parliament in a by-election in the Southern Mountains constituency, where her home village of Kinmere is situated. In a surprising twist, she was elected leader of the coalition in 2019 due to her personal popularity both within the party and throughout the south of Glanainn. After the Coalition won the 2020 election, she became Prime Minister.
Mackintosh has so far been successful in getting a number of controversial bills through parliament; including extending eligibility criteria for free public transport, and funding for adult education for those who did not finish high school. Her popularity across the country remains high, however she is more popular in her native south than the north of the country, which tends to be wealthier than the mostly-rural south.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Mackintosh took part in wildlife protection and rehabilitation, hand-rearing a number of orphaned squirrels and other wildlife while being on Dustraigh City Council. She is also a keen wild swimmer, and won numerous swimming competitions while at university. She lives with her unmarried partner Eoghann Mitchell and four pet chickens.
