The Island Territory of Aeluria is an autonomous province of Lauchenoiria. The island is situated off the western coast of mainland Lauchenoiria. The capital is Liaville, where the provincial parliament sits. Aeluria differs from the rest of Lauchenoiria in that most of its population is religious, and of native Aelurian descent.

On the 12th May 2018, the Island of Aeluria issued a unilateral declaration of independence, which was not recognised by Lauchenoiria. This declaration was rescinded following the signing of the Haven Accords.

History[edit | edit source]

Aeluria was historically a tribal culture, with tribes ruled by a matriarch of advanced years. The island was colonised by Costeno in the 1730s. Despite this, the native population still makes up the majority of inhabitants on the island. The island regained independence in the 1870s after the fall of the Costenan monarchy.

In 1921, the six mainland provinces began talks about unifying and forming a single state which would include Aeluria. The tribal rulers of Aeluria were opposed to this unification. In December 1921, mainland forces attacked Aeluria in an effort to force them to sign the treaty. The conflict lasted three months, but in February 1922, the ruling matriarch passed away, and her daughter signed the treaty 'to prevent more suffering'.

During the Communist Revolution of 1952, Aeluria supported Mateo Villanueva's coup in an attempt to return to their traditionally cooperative ways. This was not to be the case, as the Communist government restricted Aelurian autonomy further, and banned any form of self-government. Aelurians campaigned tirelessly and in 1993 they finally had a devolved parliament.

Support for independence on the island of Aeluria grew briefly in 2007, and the provincial government discussed holding a referendum on independence. However, following the economic crisis in 2008, support fell again drastically and no action was taken on the part of the Aelurian government. In May 2018, the Aelurian Provincial Government unilaterally declared independence. This declaration of independence was not recognised by most countries.

Declaration of Independence[edit | edit source]

On the 12th May 2018, First Minister Keitha Noguera issued a unilateral declaration of independence following the political crisis on the mainland. Both Suleman Chaher and Leanna Walker refused to recognise this declaration. The declaration of independence was recognised by Gnejs and Kivasek.

Following the end of the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War and the signing of the Haven Accords, the declaration was withdrawn and a referendum on independence was held in 2019, in which Aelurians voted against independence.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The Aelurians are a matriarchal culture, living in small villages, traditionally ruled by a matriarch, usually of advanced years. Aeluria has only one city, as most of its inhabitants still live in their traditional small villages, although local issues are now decided by elected councils. Much of Aelurian culture is centred around their religion of Lurian.

62% of Aelurians practice Lurian. Lurites worship at sunrise and sunset daily, outside. They view certain species of tree as sacred, and have festivals at both solstices. Little else is known about this religion, as religious beliefs are not generally told to outsiders.
