The AMCA Nationale series of cars became a symbol of economic achievement in midcentury Laeral, being referred to by the historian Liang Biya as "the car that created the middle class." It became iconic in Laeralian culture to the point of being referenced in film, television, and song, such as the song "From an AMCA Nationale" by the Laeralian folk-rock band Manifold.
Beyond its role as a producer of automobiles, however, AMCA achieved a role in Laeralian society as an chief example of Gramontist economic policies. Possibly the most high-profile state-run company, its workers were featured heavily in Republican-era propaganda and jobs at its factories were considered quite desirable. The company's privatization, then, was seen as a blow to the Republican legacy, and the announcement that shares in AMCA would be sold to investors led to street protests from Laeral's trade unions which only hardened the resolve of the rightist-dominated National Assembly.
