The Theocratic Kingdom of Zongongia, commonly called Zongongia, is a constitutional monarchy in the International Democratic Union. It borders Kerlile, Greater Acadia and Lauchenoiria, and has an estimated population of 9,246,000. Its national religion is Zongongism, after which the nation is named.
Zongongia is a devoutly religious nation, with the church and state largely intertwined. Despite this, it is not compulsory to worship the state religion and atheism exists within Zongongia, alongside other religions. The head of the church is also the monarch, presently King Osvald IV of Zongongia.
History[edit | edit source]
Formation & early history[edit | edit source]
At some point in antiquity, the religion of Zongongism was formed within the area, spreading throughout present-day Zongongia alongside some of present-day Kerlile and Lauchenoiria, as well as possibly Greater Acadia. During the formation of early kingdoms, Zongongist worshippers attempted to establish their own religious state, which became Zongongia. The territory held by Zongongia has varied throughout the centuries, both by invasion of imperialist powers, and shifting religious demographics. For the majority of history, however, Zongongia was comprised of the present-day territory along with what is now Melissa Province of Lauchenoiria.
Church rule & Melissan split[edit | edit source]
In 1442, the Zongongist Church took full control of the government, whereas previously the church had allowed a civil administration to handle non-religious matters. Under church rule, Zongongism became mandated, with non-Zongongists being expelled from the country. During this period, Valahandia invaded Zongongia, occupying much of the south of the country. Non-Zongongist residents of the south, fearing persecution, sided with the invaders and creating Melissa as a semi-colony, semi-autonomous state. This territory was disputed by the Church until the 1890s, when a democratic revolution ended Church rule in the country.
Democratic period[edit | edit source]
In 1888, a democratic revolution overthrew Church rule and established the separation of church and state. The monarchy, which was allowed to exist during the theocratic period but was subservient to the church, was returned to a position whereby the monarch was the head of state - however, the monarchy would now be subservient to parliament.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Zongongian border with Kerlile is comprised of a long mountain range that stretches down into Lauchenoiria, and into the interior of Zongongia, making the country primarily mountainous. Zongongia shares a major river with Greater Acadia, which they permit Kerlile to use unmonitored as part of a closed-doors deal which many believe is out of fear of Kerlian attack.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
Population[edit | edit source]
The population of just over 9 million is evenly distributed throughout the country, with a mix of urban and rural populations. There is no strong trend in urban versus rural wealth. Two thirds of the population are Zongongists, and only around 10% of the population are immigrants.
Languages[edit | edit source]
The Zongongian language is a modern-day evolution of proto-Scandinavian. English is also used, as well as sometimes Spanish and Kvaskm due to immigration from neighbouring nations.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Much of Zongongian culture revolves around their religion, however horses are also a large part of the local culture. Horse-riding is taught to almost every child before they are of school age. Cruelty to horses is prosecuted with the same severity as similar crimes done to humans. Most families have at least one horse; and some villages are still only accessible by foot or by horse due to mountain shapes making road-building difficult.
Religion[edit | edit source]
Zongongia as a state is built upon the foundations of the local religion of Zongongism, after which the nation is named. The religion is centred around a need for balance in the world, and teaches that individuals must be careful not to upset the balance of nature. Rocks are an important symbol in Zongongism, with Zongongists believing that rocks contain the keys to creation and that we should respect the ground we walk on. When a Zongongist comes of age, they will choose a personal sacred rock, which can be any rock that they feel a spiritual connection to. Traditionally, only once a child selects a sacred rock do they enter adulthood. The sacred rock will be held by the Zongongist while praying.
Government[edit | edit source]
Zongongia is a constitutional monarchy, with the royal family playing no part in government beyond official ceremony. The Parliament of Zongongia and the Prime Minister, currently Ivan Kristensen, are the most important parts of Zongongian politics and responsible for the implementation of policy.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The Zongongian economy is fairly strong, with the majority of families living comfortably alongside some richer members of society. Much of the economy is based around research and development, with a focus on research with practical uses rather than abstract scientific discovery. The nation is also an exporter of cotton, goat's milk and various kinds of natural stone. The growing space industry is also a major contributor, with many companies choosing to launch satellites from Zongongia.
Infrastructure[edit | edit source]
Due to the shape of certain mountains, much of Zongongia lacks road access and is only accessible via foot, horse, mountain bike or helicopter. However, other infrastructure is in good shape, with internet connectivity and phone lines available even in remote locations, meaning that in an emergency it should be easy to contact authorities. Wind power is the primary domestic method of energy production, however the nation also imports electricity from neighbouring Lauchenoiria.
