The Department of Health, often abbreviated to DoH, is the Sanctarian government department responsible for all health matters that have not been federally devolved to states. It oversees the Sanctarian Health Service, which is the single-payer universal public health system of Sanctaria. It was created in 1974 with the foundation of the Divine Republic of Sanctaria.

The Department is led by the Secretary for Health, who is nominated by the Chancellor, confirmed by the Senate, and appointed by the President of Sanctaria. The Secretary is a member of the Cabinet. The current Secretary for Health is Ann Ramirez MP.

Organisation[edit | edit source]

The Department of Health is headed by the Secretary of the Department of Health, also known as the Secretary for Health. The Secretary is aided by the senior civil servant in charge of the department, the Director-General. The Department itself is then split into various divisions or directorates, with each division headed by other senior civil servants, Directors, who report to both the Director-General and the Secretary of State. This is mirrored in all other government departments, with the only political staff being the Secretary themselves, or any other politician appointed to aide them. Civil servants throughout the department report to their superiors, who eventually report to the Director-General, who is then answerable to the Secretary. The Secretary in turn reports back to the Cabinet and, indeed, the Parliament.

The Sanctarian Health Service, the Sanctarian Medicine Agency, and the Sanctarian Transfusion & Transplant Service are non-departmental government agencies, meaning while they form part of the broader federal Department of Health, they have chief executives who report directly to the Secretary, and whose nomination to head the agencies must be approved by the Senate.
