Weston Road Wolves also known as the Wolves of Weston Road Football Club is a football team located in Xulin,Slokais Islands. They are the current champions of the SPL, winning their first title in 2022-2023. Weston Wolves have won the First Division in 1989 and 1997 and won the Association Cup in 2021 and 2023. Originally founded in 1952 and named for the planned community of Weston Road, the Wolves have become the most successful club in Ambonar. Weston Road also contests the Old Line Derby with Martyrs of Chester FC, a historical rival that currently plays in League 1.

History[edit | edit source]

Weston Road Wolves were founded in 1952, just 3 years after the founding of Weston Road Township, a planned worker's community for the Weston Steel Company. In a vote of the club's initial supporters, Wolves was added to the name to differ from Weston FC, a second-division club from another province. Weston Road began its existence in the Wojiang Bay Provincial League, before eventually gaining promotion into professional football in 1957. Weston Road similar to its parent company was run by its members after 1958, with no chairman and no board of directors. This model was praised by Juan Costa himself in 1961 during a speech calling Weston Road "a model for the implementation of National Reform in sport". The professional leagues were suspended in 1963 so that players could fight in the Great War, despite this Weston Road continued throughout the entire war. In 1968, a new ownership group was established that abolished collective leadership. Weston Road played exhibition matches against foreign teams to raise funds for humanitarian aid, a practice that continues to this day. In 1972, Weston Road rejoined the Second Division where they were promoted to the First Division by 1974.

Throughout the 1970s, Weston Road struggled to remain in the First Division with a 17th-place finish being their worst performance. In 1978, Weston Road moved into Xulin Industrial Stadium, a concrete structure that was criticized for being too big for the club. Despite this, Weston Road had one of the highest average attendances throughout the 1980s. This was partly due to the club's development of a young group of players such as Diego Bonaventura and Erik House via its youth academy. In 1988-89, Weston Road won their first league title, with House being the league's leading scorer with 28 goals. This was followed by entrance into the Continental competition, where the club managed to win several group-stage matches. However, House and Bonaventura were both gone by 1991 leading to a return to the mid-table. Throughout the 90s, Weston Road developed under the management of Carlson Lang becoming a title contender over time. Despite this, Weston Road didn't manage to win a trophy despite making two cup finals during the 90s.

Colours and Kit[edit | edit source]

The club's traditional colors are Orange and White and allude to the colors of the Weston Steel logo. Although from 1964-1967 white and black stripes were used as orange dye were in short supply. Weston Road was the first club to display sponsorships in 1977, a decision that was criticized at the time. Weston Steel remained a sponsor until it folded in 2003, it was then replaced by WRS Sweets for several years before switching to its current sponsor Weston Nuclear Energy, who opened the nearby Weston Plant in 2012. The club's home kit consists of an orange body and black arms while the away kit consists of a white body with orange detailing. Weston Road also has two third kits, the Save the Wolves Kit, a grey design featuring the outline of trees, and a purple Football Aid Cup kit. Both are used on special promotional match days with all proceeds going into wildlife preservation and humanitarian aid respectively.
