The Spirit of 1837, also known as S37 or the Party of 1837, is a major Maximusian political party which was formed in 2004 by a collection of disillusioned members of the National Conservative Party and the (now defunct) Alliance for Freedom. Though at one point the fourth largest party in government, the Spirit of 1837 has seen falling membership and voter turnout in recent years. The name, "Spirit of 1837," is a reference to the year in which the Iustitian Civil War broke out, alluding to advocacy for the foundational principles of the nation. Self described "paleoconservatives," the party promotes increased civil liberties, fiscal austerity, and a drastic reduction to the size and scope of government.
