Regular circulating coinage[edit | edit source]

Prior to 2023, there was no uniform design for novelle coinage. Various one-off and short-run designs were in use subsequent to the colonisation of the Novellan Archipelago, though the obverse typically contained all of the same elements seen in the current series of novelle coins (albeit, without a uniform design). While these coins did become far more consistent with the establishment of the Novella Islands National Mint, there was still no persisting standard. After a comprehensive economic review concluding in 2022, the Treasury directed the National Mint to design a unified set of six coins, which would comprise at least 80% of all minted circulating coins per year.

As a result of this policy change, the obverse is now always the same for circulating coins; year of minting and full national title around the circumference, encircling the Edopru flower from the national seal, in the centre. The six standard designs for the reverse of the coins differ depending on their value, with each portraying an element of significant cultural symbolism to the Novellan people (Iustitia representing justice, the optical telescope representing a curiosity for knowledge, etc.).

Although the reverse of 80% of all circulating coins must be minted to this standard, the allocation of the remaining 20% is at the discretion of the National Mint, allowing for limited-run circulating coins (e.g. those to commemorate a particular event, celebrate a person, etc.). The obverse of these coins, however, must still adhere to the standard laid out for all circulating coins.
