The Great Game was the period in international relations from 1967 to approximately 2000, a period shaped by the aftermath of the Great War where states sought to shape the post-war order largely through diplomacy, aid, and covert intervention, rather than military force. This period began with unity between the victorious Coalition powers of the Great War, which gradually gave way to international competition and a multipolar world order. The Great Game is generally considered to have ended around the turn of the 21st century, when a thawing in international relations and increased multilateral cooperation were believed to have unlocked a new era in international affairs, while post-Great War alliances and rivalries showed signs of fading away.

History[edit | edit source]

With the end of the Great War, the victorious Coalition powers (notably Eiria, Greater Acadia, Laeral, Lauchenoiria, Libertas Omnium Maximus, and the Novella Islands) were united in their desire to prevent future conflict and reconstruct the former Imperial Pact states as peaceful members of the international community. During the war, Coalition heads of state had affirmed their desire to jointly construct a more just post-war order through the Galinios Charter, a document signed by the leaders of leading Coalition states committing its signatories to pursuing self-determination and peaceful cooperation among nations following the war. With the end of the Great War in 1967, the Coalition powers jointly occupied Darya, while Coalition states individually occupied nations such as Haesan and Kabo Geshaan. The Coalition states also sought to promote international cooperation in order to prevent future world conflicts.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Decolonization[edit | edit source]

See full article: Decolonization

The dissolution of the Daryan Empire saw Andhrapur and Kabo Geshaan become independent nations, while the Nuiqsut Confederation had won its independence from the Opthelian Empire during the war. Rival world powers soguth to influence the trajectory of nations which had newly become independent via this Third Wave of decolonization.

Reconstruction[edit | edit source]

In states under Coalition occupation, referred to as Reconstruction, occupation forces worked to rebuild nations devastated by war as stable and democratic nations integrated into the international community. This goal was largely successful: Haesan and Darya were integrated as stable members of the international community. In Slokais Islands, Coalition occupation was only partial and limited in duration, with the Slokaisian opposition taking charge of the nation's post-war rebuilding.
