Kur. Mathias Jansons OSM is an Eirian professional figure skater and Olympic silver medalist. He is the reigning champion of several Eirian figure skating competitions, and earned silver medals in Men's Figure Skating at both the 2021 and 2023 Olympiads. He is known for his short programs, one of which earned him the first Men's Short Program Olympic Record (which was broken by his Laeralite rival Kerry Chan in 2023).
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Mathias Jansons was born April 6th, 2001, in Mākonage, Nordjura Province. Jansons' parents were secondary teachers in a local public school, with his father teaching Eirian and his mother teaching global studies. His mother, Liana Kaleja, was a former ice in her youth, earning a silver medal at the National Youth Championships and a bronze at the Eirian FS University Cup. As such, Jansons was introduced to the Figure Skating world from a very early age. In an interview, he quipped that he "...almost was born on the ice."
Career[edit | edit source]
Initially, Jansons started out as a junior ice dancer, winning a few medals at local competitions. However, during a competition at age 14, retired national champion in women's singles Talia Renōva noticed Jansons' swiftness and fluidity on the ice and suggested to his parents that he try competing in Men's singles instead. In just a year and a half of coaching from Renōva, he won his first major accolade, a bronze medal at the National Youth Championships. The next year, at age 16, he earned his first Youth Nationals gold medal, repeating the same feat the next year.
After he graduated from youth competition (and secondary school), Jansons took on the adult and collegiate circuits, earning widespread social media attention with his fast and expressive skating style. A minor injury left him unable to compete at the first Eirian Adult National Championship that he qualified for (2019), but that did not discourage him. The following year, he set a national record for highest-scoring short program in Men's Singles (137.45). He has since beaten this record (and also set various other records) numerous times, winning four straight national championships back to back.
Olympic Appearances[edit | edit source]
Jansons first qualified to compete in the 2021 Olympiad in his native Nordjura Province. At this meet, he set the first ever Olympic Record in the Men's Short Program with a score of 140.41. This score helped to earn him a silver medal behind the Laeralite Kerry Chan.
In the 2023 Olympiad in Hanshui, Laeral, Jansons earned his second silver medal, getting beaten (and having his olympic record broken) by Chan. Despite this setback, Jansons appeared calm and nonchalant, occasionally breaking his stoic silence to shout encouragements and congratulations to fellow skaters.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Jansons graduated from Nordjura Provincial University's Mākonage campus with a Bachelor's degree in Global Studies and Communication. He is openly bisexual, but is very closed off with his personal life.
Jansons is no stranger to charity work, often throwing fundraisers and exhibition skates in order to raise money for certain charities, such as the First Bridge Association, Youth Sports leagues, and the Colorful Rings Fund.
