Bethune (Mandarin: 白求恩) is a Laeralian province located in the Peninsular region of Laeral, with Arquien to the north and Lematre to the south. It has coasts on the Xianhai Gulf to the west and the Albarine Sea to the east. With a population of X million, it is the most populous province in peninsular Laeral. It is subdivided into the municipality of Lyrene and the townships of Granville and Quimper.
History
Bethune was historically sparsely populated and home primarily to small agricultural communities. Established as a colonial settlement in 1808 by commercial speculators under a ducal charter, the province was settled by cotton and sugar plantations which employed largely indentured Rén labor.
Economy
Lyrene is the largest port in the Xianhai Peninsula and has traditionally held a major role in exporting peninsular agricultural goods, particularly cotton and sugar, for processing. Cotton is historically Bethune's largest industry and continues to make up a large portion of the economy, as does poultry. Peanuts were introduced during the Green Revolution in order to revitalize exhausted soil.
Given ready access to the ports at Lyrene and at Granville, some heavy industry now takes place in Bethune, including automobile manufacturing. Granville is also a center for oil exports from the Brissac oil field.

Bethune's population is majority-Arrivée yet more racially diverse and secular compared to its provincial neighbors.
Government
Like its neighbors in the Xianhai Peninsula, Bethune is traditionally a conservative stronghold, but due to gradual migration in the 2000s to Lyrene has now become moderately left-leaning. The provincial assembly is governed by a coalition of Progressives and New Democrats.
Culture
Bethune is known for its intricate lace designs, historically sewn by Bethunian women and used to adorn tables as doilies and as churchgoing Sunday headgear. Homespun cotton clothing is also a distinctive Bethune product.
