The Kerlian Censorship Board (KCB) is a state-run organisation in Kerlile responsible for the classification of media in Kerlile; assessment of foreign media; censoring of written texts; and management of Outside Media Consumption Permits.

Domestic media[edit | edit source]

The KCB is responsible for analysis and classification of domestically-produced media, for example age-rating of films. The Board is also responsible for ensuring that domestically-produced media in all forms is in compliance with the laws of Kerlile. Since 2020, the KCB has no longer had to approve written materials prior to publication; but published material can still be reported to them for review using an online form.

Domestic films and television shows are also submitted to the KCB to be given an age-suitability rating. There are five available suitability ratings in Kerlile:

KCB Age Suitability Classifications
Name Description Guidelines
U Universal; suitable for all age groups May contain infrequent very mild language; may contain mild violence if justified by the context
PG Parental guidance; usually suitable for all but some scenes may be disturbing to young children May contain mild language or moderate violence; may contain very mild sex/drug references. Children of any age may watch but parents are advised to be cautious.
14 Age 14+; suitable for those aged 14 and over May contain strong language, adolescent themes, fairly mature content including nudity, implied sexual activity, implied drug use.
14F Age 14+ for Females; suitable for women aged 14 and over; and men aged 18 and over May contain strong language, adolescent themes, mature content; may also contain light political themes depicting misogyny or criticism of gynarchy.
18 Age 18+; suitable for those aged 18 and over No limits on language beyond general speech laws; no limits on depictions of drug use; may heavily imply sexual intercourse but may not show real, genuine sex on screen.

Prior to 2020, a sixth classification existed, 18F, for films suitable for women over the age of 18, but not suitable for males of any age. Films in this classification were those who would otherwise be given an 18 rating, but which also included criticisms of gynarchy and explicitly misogynistic language. In 2020, however, following the guidance of President Rebecca Arnott, this category was abolished and all 18F films were reclassified as either 18 or 14F depending on their non-political content.

Foreign media[edit | edit source]

The majority of foreign media which enters Kerlile is sent to the KCB for evaluation. Books, television shows, films and more are all analysed for anti-Kerlian themes and may be permitted, restricted, or outright banned. Films which are approved for general distribution will also be given an age suitability rating as with domestic media. Content may be permitted with no restrictions; restricted to certain ages, genders, or professions; or outright banned for anyone without an OMCP.

Certain foreign television networks, publishing companies, or production companies may also come to an arrangement with either the Council of Kerlile or the KCB itself to pre-approve all of their content. Currently, a number of Xiomeran networks presently have this pre-approval. Companies applying for this permission must provide guarantees regarding their content, and if they are found to violate these guarantees then their pre-approval will be rescinded.

Censoring and editing[edit | edit source]

The KCB is also responsible for the censoring of content within partially-permitted written materials. While the majority of books are either permitted fully or banned; some texts are edited to partially-censor content. This is common within academic science texts, where certain examples that imply "misogynistic attitudes" may be removed from the text before dissemination in Kerlile while leaving the underlying theory.

Outside Media Consumption Permits[edit | edit source]

The KCB is also responsible for the administration of the OMCP system in Kerlile, including carrying out assessments for applicants and ensuring permit holders are compliant with regulations.
