The Commonwealth of Mannenois, commonly called Mannenois, is a sovereign country located in the International Democratic Union. Its nine provinces and three territories span over 700,000 square miles. Mannenois' fifty-five million citizens live primarily in urban areas located on the coasts. The capital of Mannenois is Victoria and the largest city is Manhattan Beach. Other major urban centers include Port Royal, New Fairfax, and Newport.
Various indigenous peoples inhabited Mannenois for thousands of years before the arrival of Christian missionaries. In the 17th century, Christian missionaries landed and built permanent settlements in southern Mannenois. The tension between the missionaries and the indigenous tribes led to numerous conflicts until the arrival of the Sainterran navy in 1730. Soon after, Sainterre incorporated Mannenois as a crown colony. Eventually, it became Sainterre’s most populous colony due to its hospitable climate, expansive coastlines, and abundance of natural resources. Mannenois declared its independence from the Crown in 1964 during the Second Sainterran Civil War which resulted in the dissolution of the Sainterran monarchy and the collapse of its imperial holdings. Following the official handover of authority in 1965, Mannenois became a sovereign country.
Today, the Commonwealth of Mannenois is a federal constitutional parliamentary republic, with the President serving as the head of state and the Federal Chancellor as the head of government who chairs the Cabinet. Mannenois has a bicameral legislature comprised of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Mannenois is a highly developed country and member of various international organizations like the International Democratic Union and the World Assembly. It has a strong mixed economy which is largely dominated by the information technology, tourism, aerospace industries.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Mannenois is pronounced "man-nen-wa" and is likely derived from the Old Laroisan words, manenn meaning "great forest", and the suffix ois which is an honorific traditionally prescribed to villages.
The first formal use of the name "Mannenois" was in 1720 when it appeared on the Royal Charter granted by King Alexander V of Sainterre to the Fairfax Company, the private company that would own Mannenois until its sale to the Sainterran Crown in 1740. Soon after, Mannenois was officially incorporated into Sainterre's imperial holdings under the name "Sainterran Mannenois" which would be used until independence in 1965.
During the Second Sainterran Civil War, Mannenois declared its independence and permanent separation from the Crown. The Mannenoisan Legislative Council, the colony's devolved legislature convened and drafted the Federal Constitution, which was largely written by Jonathan Grey and the Committee of Five, and officially named the country the "Commonwealth of Mannenois". The name and the Federal Constitution itself was approved unanimously by the Legislative Council and ratified by former Governor General, then President William Brookings.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Mannenois is one of the most geographically diverse countries in the International Democratic Union and is often geographically bisected into two regions, Southern Mannenois, comprising the ten southernmost states, and Northern Mannenois, comprising the fifteen northernmost states. It is surrounded by the Agrimai Ocean on all sides.
In the middle of the country lies the Mannenois Central Valley, bounded by the Sierra Mountains in the east, and the Totem Mountains in the west. The Central Valley is Mannenois's productive agricultural heartland.
The Channel Islands are located off the Western coast, while the Farrow Islands lie north of San Fierro.
The Sierra Mountains includes the highest peak in the country, Mount Olympus, at 16,505 feet. The range embraces the Hood Valley, famous for its glacially carved domes, and Rainier National Park, home to the giant evergreen trees, the largest living organisms on Earth, and the deep freshwater lake, Lake Beauchamp, the largest lake in the country by volume.
About 45 percent of the country's total surface area is covered by forests, and Mannenois's diversity of pine species is unmatched by any other country in the IDU. Many of the trees in the Mannenois White Mountains are the oldest in the world; an individual bristlecone pine is over 5,000 years old.
A majority of Mannenois's cities are located in either the San Fierro Bay Area or the Port Royal metropolitan area in Northern Mannenois; or the Manhattan Beach area, the Inland Empire, or the New Fairfax metropolitan area in Southern Mannenois. The Manhattan Beach Area, the San Fierro Bay Area, and the Port Royal metropolitan area are among several major metropolitan areas along the Mannenois coast.
Climate[edit | edit source]
Although most of the country has a Mediterranean climate, due to the country's large size the climate ranges from polar to subtropical. The cool Mannenois Current offshore often creates summer fog near the coast. Farther inland, there are colder winters and hotter summers. The maritime moderation results in the shoreline summertime temperatures of Manhattan Beach and San Fierro being the coolest of all major metropolitan areas and uniquely cool compared to areas on the same latitude in the interior and on the east coast of the North American continent. Even the Port Royal shoreline is cooler in summer than most areas with similar latitudes. Just a few miles inland, summer temperature extremes are significantly higher, with downtown Manhattan Beach being several degrees warmer than at the coast. The same microclimate phenomenon is seen in the climate of the Bay Area, where areas sheltered from the ocean experience significantly hotter summers in contrast with nearby areas closer to the ocean.
Northern parts of the country have more rain than the south. Mannenois's mountain ranges also influence the climate: some of the rainiest parts of the state are west-facing mountain slopes. Northwestern Mannenois has a temperate climate, and the Central Valley has a Mediterranean climate but with greater temperature extremes than the coast. The high mountains, including the Sierras, have an alpine climate with snow in winter and mild to moderate heat in summer.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Mannenois is one of the ecologically richest and most diverse parts of the world, and includes some of the most endangered ecological communities. Mannenois is part of the Nearctic realm and spans a number of terrestrial ecoregions.
Cities and Towns[edit | edit source]
Mannenois has 538 incorporated cities and towns, of which 501 are cities and 37 are towns. Under most state laws, the terms "city" and "town" are explicitly interchangeable; the name of an incorporated municipality in most states can either be "City of (Name)" or "Town of (Name)".
Victoria became Mannenois's first incorporated city on February 27, 1732. Manhattan Beach, San Fierro, and Newport tied for Mannenois's second incorporated city, each receiving incorporation on April 27, 1738.
The majority of these cities and towns are within one of five metropolitan areas: the Manhattan Beach Metropolitan Area, the San Fierro Bay Area, the Newport-Orange Area, the Port Royal-New Fairfax metropolitan area, or the Victoria-Portland metropolitan area.
