Calhualyana is the current Empress of Xiomera. The former Security Secretary of the country, she seized power from Emperor Xochiuhue in a coup in October 2020.
Early Life and Education
Calhualyana was born on 17 December 1982 in the city of Tlopeca, a working-class suburb of Huaxtumba. She was the child of Atemin, a local policeman, and Tiacamaco, a public school teacher.
Calhualyana distinguished herself from an early age as both a very bright student, and a very ambitious one. She earned admittance to one of the nation's best colleges, Tlālacuetztla Polytechnic University, eventually graduating with a degree in criminal justice. At the urging of her father, Calhualyana entered the Imperial Intelligence Academy in Huitzitaca after graduation.
Calhualyana once again distinguished herself both as a superb student in the IIA, and a very ambitious one. When asked what her dream job was at her Academy graduation ceremony in 2007 by then-Security Secretary Zinezin, Calhualyana replied that it was the Secretary's job, after he retired. While the blunt answer shocked her former instructors in attendance at the graduation, Zinezin later told his aides he was both amused and impressed by Calhualyana's directness. Zinezin fast-tracked Calhualyana's career from that point forward, until his retirement from the Security Secretariat.
Career
Early Career
After graduating, Calhualyana joined the Agency for Security and Intelligence (ASI), working as a low-level intelligence analyst as all recent Academy graduates begin their careers. However, Calhualyana would not remain a low-level agent for long. Focusing on domestic surveillance and threat analysis, Calhualyana quickly distinguished herself as a superior analyst and agent. She would rise rapidly through the ranks of ASI, helping to prevent domestic opponents of the Empire from organizing and personally thwarting several planned coups or uprisings against Emperor Topilpopoca and the Xiomeran government. She was rewarded for her efforts by being named one of several Undersecretaries for Security in August of 2017, leaving ASI and joining the Security Secretariat, the government agency responsible for Xiomera's entire security and intelligence network.
Undersecretary of Security
From August 2017 to April 2020, Calhualyana served as the Undersecretary of Security responsible for domestic intelligence and security in the Empire. She initially was a supporter of her boss, then-Security Secretary Tepilcayotl, during the Great Selection that led to Yauhmi becoming Empress of Xiomera. After Tepilcayotl committed suicide, Calhualyana thought she would be named Secretary of Security, but was passed over in favor of Zalpalatli, a Yauhmi loyalist. Being rejected for Security Secretary, coupled with a disagreement with Yauhmi over the fate of the Auroras from Kerlile that had been discovered in Xiomera, led to Calhualyana deciding to join the plot led by Xochiuhue and General Xōchhuitl to overthrow the Empress in April 2020.
Secretary of Security
After Yauhmi was overthrown, the new Emperor appointed Calhualyana as Secretary of Security. Calhualyana continued to focus on trying to suppress domestic dissent to the coup and maintaining stability and order within the Empire. Many of her efforts were made harder by the increasingly autocratic orders coming from Emperor Xochiuhue, which angered Xiomeran citizens and eventually led to a mass uprising in western Xiomera. The Emperor placed blame for the failures on Calhualyana, the Security Secretariat, and ASI, which Calhualyana deemed unfair.
Empress of Xiomera
While the two initially worked well together, Xochiuhue's increasing brutality and refusal to listen to the advice Calhualyana and the intelligence community tried to give him led to a major rift developing between the two. After a major disagreement on an order Xochiuhue had given which Calhualyana deemed a threat to Xiomeran security, the Secretary joined up with General Zinahue, the head of the Xiomeran General Staff, and Brigadier General Sadak, the Iskirami general in charge of allied Iskirami forces protecting the Palace of Flowers, and overthrew Xochiuhue on 17 October 2020. Calhualyana declared herself Empress in Xochiuhue's place. She pledged to restore order and harmony to the country in a televised address, in which she also offered peace talks to end the Second Xiomeran Civil War.
Family Life
Calhualyana is unmarried and has no children. When asked about her, one of her former romantic partners, Tecke, told the Democratic Times that Calhualyana "treats men as she treats everyone else, as useful tools" and that "the only thing Calhualyana truly loves is her career."
