The Monarchical Republic of Christos, commonly called Christos, is a Monarchical Republic located on the planet of Terragon which resides in the Colonis Spatium Universe. Terragon is an earth like planet and is the size of Mercury.
In the NationStates Universe Christos is part of the International Democratic Union region. On the IDU planet Christos is located on the continent of Hespia on land known as Dos Islas (Two Islands) and is bordered on the North by Gonhog and borders the Great Gulf to the South.
The people of Christos are known for their kind nature, their love for their country, and their expertise in technology. The industry sector is dominated by Tourism industry, with significant contributions from Information Technology, Basket Weaving, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Christos cherishes the environment and is one of the leading nations invested in alternative energy.
Etymology
The present name of the nation Christos is pronounced ['Kris-tos'], and is named after the founder of the nation King Chris. Others speculate that the name Christos was used to honor Jesus Christ or the St. Christopher the saint Chris was named after. The standard way to refer to a citizen of Christos is "Christosian" ['Kris-toe-si-an']. During the country's expansion during the Empire Era the country was called The Chris Empire, it is pronounced ['Kris Em-pie-er']. The citizens of The Chris Empire were referred as Christio Citizens, which is pronounced ['Kris-Tee-Oh Sidizen'].
History
Christos history can be divided into Four eras - The Colonial Era, The Christos Era, The Empire Era, and The Republic Era.
The first known people that lived on Terragon were a number of tribes scattered throughout the planet. These tribes eventually formed into 9 different cultures.
The Colonial Era
The native tribal population declined when the United States of America "discovered" and colonized the planet of Terragon during a period known as The Great Age of Exploration and Colonization. This period saw many nations of Earth embrace and further research the technologies of space exploration and planet terraforming. The US settled a colony called Jacksonia on Terragon. The relationship between Jacksonia and the 9 native tribes was weary at first but slowly declined when Jacksonia started to expand. In retaliation to the expansion the 9 tribes formed an alliance called The Brotherhood to match the growing strength of Jacksonia. A treaty was signed between The Brotherhood and Jacksonia to ease tension on Terragon. The treaty was quickly ignored by Jacksonia when more people arrived on Terragon looking for fame and fortune. Tensions boiled over when a Governor of Jacksonia was killed by one of the tribes and war was declared between the Jacksonia and The Brotherhood known as the Native War of Supremacy. The war lasted a brutal 5 years. In the end Jacksonia won in the end and the lands of the tribes were taken over.
An internal conflict split the people of Jacksonia. One side supported the complete extermination of the native tribes (The Red Faction) while the other side supported better relations with the tribes that had been defeated (The Blue Faction). Ultimately The Blue Faction separated from Jacksonia and founded a new colony named Christos. Christos was named after the leader of The Blue Faction, Chris. Though some sources say the colony was named in honor of Jesus Christ. Chris was a disgruntled Jacksonian turned activist when he saw how the government treated the native tribes and also how poorer Jacksonians were being treated badly by the American/ Jacksonian elites and American tourists. Tensions grew between Jacksonia and Christos when the separation occurred. Tensions between Christos and the US grew when the US issued a tax on most goods coming from Christos. Eventually the colony of Christos was labeled a rogue colony by the US. Tensions boiled over during an incident known as The First Revolt and in retaliation Christos informally declared war on both the US and Jacksonia, after an informal declaration of independence from the US was issued. The War for Christosian Independence lasted 3 years with Christos gaining the victory due to the backing of the native tribes, the recognition of Christos's sovereignty by other nations, and the declining popularity with the US government and the war by US citizens. On October 7 the US surrendered unconditionally; then on October 8 Christos formally declared independence.
The Christos Era
A Grand Convention was held in capital of Christos, St. Christopher (Dedicated to the Saint Chris was named after) to determine what the next steps would be for Christos now that independence had been won and to write a Constitution for the country. The 9 tribes that had been conquered by Columbia were able to send representatives to the Convention. It was decided that the country would become a parliamentary democracy with the head being the Prime Minister. The legislature would be unicameral and be called the National House of the Populace. The Supreme Court of Christos was also made with a 7 member body. For Chris's leadership during the war the Convention unanimously decided that Chris would be crowned King and that the a Constitutional Monarchy would also be established. The King would have power over government but safe guards were installed to prevent a tip of power. It was also decided that the year would restart to 0 AC (After Crowning) when the coronation of Chris took place. The 9 tribes were given back some of their lands and were also given autonomy but, with persuasion from Chris, promised not to seek independence and still be a part of Christos.
Chris's reign as King of Christos started off well. There were a few disagreements with the Prime Minister and the National House of the Populace but it was relatively tame. During Chris's reign Christos experienced a strengthening of the government, infrastructure, industry, education, and healthcare. Christosian identity was also being formed. King Chris's reign lasted for 55 years before he abdicated. During the remaining years of his reign Chris declared issued a decree stating that his next heir would not hold the title of King but be called Crown Prince/ Princess. The title change was made to show that the next monarch was crowned by the people.
The Empire Era
After Chris's abdication his son Luke was crowned Crown Prince of Christos. During Crown Prince Luke's reign a civil war started between the supporters of the current government (The Loyalists) and those wanting to abolish the monarchy and switch to a federal republic (The Republicans). The civil war was known as the Christosian Civil War of Leadership, after 7 years of war the Loyalists claimed victory and cemented the rule of government and the monarchy. Also during this time the government had ambitions to expand Christos's borders. At first the monarchy and the people were not supportive of expansion due to harming native tribal lands but after a while the monarchy and the people started to support the idea of Manifest Destiny, some even supported the idea of taking control of the whole planet of Terragon. Expansion started out slow but eventually picked up when Crown Prince Robert ascended the throne. Robert, along with the government started a campaign called The March West. The March West campaign was a plan to expand the territories of Christos West of its current borders. The March West eventually led to conflicts with the neighboring native tribes. The tribes reminded Robert and the Christosian government about the treaty signed with The Brotherhood; so Robert issued a decree stating that any tribe can still have autonomy but must swear fealty to the monarchy and the government of Christos, if not swift annihilation will come to them. Out of the 9 tribes 5 of them accepted Robert's offer, the other 2 formed a new alliance called the "West Alliance." The March West campaign turned into a 2 year war against the West Alliance in what is known as the West War. Christos eventually won the war and annexed the War Alliance's land. With the defeat of the West Alliance the March West campaign ended. Crown Prince Robert and the Christosian government declared Christos an Empire and the name Chris Empire was used interchangeable with Christos. Ambitions of expansion died down in the coming years due to rebellions and the reinforcing of Christos's lands.
The ambitions of expansion resurfaced when Crown Prince Alexander came to power. In a 10 year long campaign known as the Terragon Expansion War Alexander conquered all the lands in Terragon and placed them all under Christosian rule. Due to 10 year war the country was fell into a financial crisis. There also rose a monarchy succession crisis as well. During Alexander's conquests he fathered his first born son that he named Robert but because Alexander was busy conquering he left his son in the care of his trusted adviser Khalid Al-Uslam. Young Robert grew up all his life in the care of Al-Uslam, even considering him his true father. Alexander's other advisers worried that Robert would be so influenced by Al-Uslam that he would convert to the Islamic faith, there was no religion rule anywhere in the law of succession. So with the urging of his advisers Alexander took his son back at age 17. When Alexander died Robert was crowned Crown Prince but during the naming ceremony where rulers could change or keep their first name Robert declared that he would be known as Crown Prince Uslam I and it was revealed that Robert had converted to Islam. The government and the populace were livid with the news. Rebellions and riots flared up during his reign, even the Prime Minister at the time urged the Crown Prince to abdicate. After 5 years Crown Prince Uslam I relented and abdicated his throne to his brother who became Crown Prince Christopher III. Appalled at what had happened to his brother Christopher III issued one of Christos's most famous speeches The Tolerance Speech in front of the government and the nation. He condemned the treatment of his brother due to his faith and declared that tolerance classes would be a required training course for anyone that wanted to work in Christos and any company that wanted to do business in Christos no exceptions. During Christopher III's reign, Christopher III delegated more tasks to the Prime Minister compared to the previous Prime Ministers. During the reign of Victor III a recession started and soon civil unrest rose when calls for a federal republic rose again. Victor III and the government hardened their stance on keeping the monarchy and the government intact. Because of this the people staged mass protests know as the Leadership Protests. The people involved in the protests named themselves The Representatives. Even with the heavy pressure Victor III would not budge even after the urging of the government. These protests put a lot of strain on Crown Prince Victor III that he fell ill and died the following month.
Alexander II, Victor III's son, was crowned Crown Prince and his first decree was to end the "cold war" against the people and the government now known as the Leadership Protest Conflict after 4 years by calling a second Grand Convention to reform the government. The convention decided that the monarchy would still be in place but the government system of Christos would change to a Federal Republic. The Prime Minister would be replaced by a President and the President would share power with the Crown Prince/ Princess. The National People's Congress was also reworked from a unicameral legislature to a bicameral legislature. Congress would have two house, the Senate (2 per Oblast) and the House of Populous (Based on Population of each Obloast) with the Speaker of the House being renamed Premier. A new constitution was written and signed and an election was scheduled for the 2nd Saturday in November and in January the person with the most voted would become inaugurated as President. It was also decided that The Chris Empire name would no longer be used to refer to the nation. It was decided that the capitol of Christos would move from St. Christoper to a new city that would be called Coronasburg. Also during Crown Prince Alexander II's reign Alexander announced that he was gay and that he intended to marry his life long partner William. Because of this decree the crown would pass to his brother Benjamin.
The Republic Era
The election of the first President of Christos ushered in the Republic Era. During this era Christos reached its pinnacle of expansion. President Paul Warren the first President of Christos along with the National People's Congress increased the number of Justices on the Supreme Court from 7 to 13. President Warren also reworked and renamed most of the cabinet positions. During the presidency of Diane Marconi Christos joined the region of the International Democratic Union. From the membership Christos was able to request land on the continent of Hespia on land known by Christosians as Dos Islas (Two Islands). Also from the membership Christos was able to open up new alliance and trade agreement talks with the many nations residing in the region.
Geography
Terragon is an Earth like planet that has an atmospheric that can sustain life. It is orbited by 1 satellite named the moon. The land is more mountainous in the center of its main continent and their are more islands on its Southern hemisphere. Terragon orbits around a a red dwarf star named Helios. Terragon spins on its axis 365 days per 1 revolution/ year.

In the Christos and Empire Eras the government of Christos was a Parliamentary Democracy and a Constitutional Monarchy. The head of government was the Prime Minister while the head of state was the King which then became the Crown Prince/ Princess. The legislature was a unicameral legislature called the National House of the Populous. The leader of the House was named the Speaker of the House.
In the Republic Era the government of Christos became a Federal Republic and a Monarchical Republic. The head of the government changed to a President while the head of state remained the Crown Prince/ Princess. The legislature remained unicameral but the name changed to the National People's Congress and the leader was renamed to Premier.
