Nation

Libertas Omnium Maximus, commonly referred to by its acronym, LOM, is one of many nations of the International Democratic Union. The LOM joined the IDU In July 2017, and joined the larger nationstates community in April of that same year. Libertas Omnium Maximus is a Democratic Republic led by President Lucas Brown, a former Congressman, and successful lawyer.

The Nation itself was officially recognized as its own, sovereign entity in 1802, after 10 years of civil war with the larger Nation, Valhandia. Since 1802, the Nation has grown in size, population, and international respect. With this said, Libertas Omnium Maximus is still led by the guiding principals of freedom, equity, and the right to live free of fear to this day.

In 2017, Libertas Omnium Maximus appointed Daniel McRoy to be its first ambassador to the World Assembly.

History

Iustitian Government

In the year 1266 A.D., setelers from Valahandia first set foot on the Island of Iustitia. Over the next 400 years, Iustitia grew to become the wealthiest region in all of the Kingdom of Valhandia. The Island made its money off of fishing. The Iustitians were master fisherman and brought in more trout, cod, salmon, haddock, and tuna in the year of 1560 than the rest of Valhandia combined.

Overtime the once mighty Kingdom of Valahandia began to weaken. It’s borders were being overrun by savages, who ransacked and pillaged Valhandian villages. The Island of Iustitia however, continued to thrive to to its isolated position. The leaders of Iustitia soon realized that it was only a matter of time until the Kingdom was destroyed. The Iustitians decided to break with Valhandia in order to avoid going down with the kingdom when it inevitably collapsed. King Morvaan II would not agree to loose his wealthiest region.

In the year of 1798, King Morvaan led his naval armada against the fishing vessels of the Iustitians. After more than 3 days of intense, ship to ship, conflict, King Morvaan II was vanquished by a group of elite Iustitian marines, who snuck board Morvaan’s ship, the Coquerer and stabbed him to death as he attempted to leap overboard. Disheartened and leaderless, the Valhandian armada turned tail and fled. The Iustitians had won the day.

After 4 additional years of diplomatic negotiation between Iustitia and Valahandia, Queen Galhawendel, Morvaan’s daughter, agreed to allow Iustitia to operate as an independent state. The Nation was led by a group of elders called “The Wisdom.” They held unchecked, absolute power.

In 1820, the newly formed Iustitian government purchased the nearby Island of Sentinel along with hundreds of miles of uncharted wilderness on the continent of Hespia from Queen Galhawendel. This purchase allowed the citizens of Iustitia to be less cramped and own more land per capita.

Democratic Libertas Omnium Maximus

Very few Iustitians were in favor of The Wisdom from the start, and more and more citizens began to resent The Wisdom when they declared themselves to be “supreme overlords.” However, The Wisdom continued to rule Iustitia until May 10, 1836, when a mob of angry liberal protestors stormed the Wisdom’s palace and killed four of the elders. The leader of the coup, Michael J. Chauncey declared himself “president” and attempted to establish a democratic government immediately after.

Some of The Wisdom’s supporters attempted to retake the palace on two occasions that year however both were unsuccessful and after six months of civil war, Chauncey was democraticly elected, by a popular vote of the people, to be Iustitia’s first president. The liberals had taken the day and, while likely in a euphoric (and possibly intoxicated) state, burned the palace to the ground.

On September 17, 1837, the name Iustitia was removed from all official plaques, ledgers, documents, pamphlets, books, and anything else Chauncey’s compatriots could get their hands on. The Nation was officially renamed Libertas Omnium Maximus and the Capitol was moved to the small but quaint city of Litudinem, which was situated near the Lyn river. The old Iustitian Government was no more.

Geography

Topography

The Island of Iustitia has relatively rugged terrain. The Island has a maximum elevation of 9,000 feet and an average height of 300 feet above sea level.

The Island of Sentinel is comprised entirely of cliff faces, many reaching over 12,000 feet above sea level.

The mainland of Libertas Omnium Maximus has a much milder terrain. It is relatively flat with some small hills in the West and North. There is also some swamp land in the south.

Climate

Libertas Omnium Maximus has a relatively cold climate similar to that of Sweden. However, all regions of The LOM experience four distinct seasons. The spring and fall lasts slightly less time than the winter and summertime. The Mainland of LOM experiences slightly more moderate temperatures than the two islands. This is due to the fact that hat our breezes and intense winds do not often reach The dense forests of the Mainland.

The two Islands experience much less rain than the Mainland. With this said, all of Libertas Omnium Maximus experiences a few months in the winter where they receive high levels of precipitation. This usually comes in the form of snow or hail.

Biodiversity

Due to its reletivly large size, Libertas Omnium Maximus is filled with many species of flora and fauna. The many rivers, brooks, and streams of the mainland are populated by salmon, minows, trout, bass, and many species of fresh water fish. The cold temperature of these rivers however, prohibits the existence of any tropical fish or plants. In the sea, haddoc, sole, tuna, and Great White Sharks, amoung many other species of fish, can be found.

The Mainland is made up almost entirely of Pine Forests. These trees provide habitat for squirrels, rabbits, bobcats, wolves, bears, mountain lions, and many species of fish. These woods are very serene and atract nature lovers from around the world.

The two Island, due to their rugged composition, are home to only a few species of seabirds, dune grass and a few trees. The Island are known for their beaches and architecture, not their wildlife.

Politics

Law

Libertas Omnium Maximus is currently in the process of establishing a proper court system. Currently, if you are caught committing a crime and you are a Maximusian Citizen, you will be fined anywhere between $15 (speeding) and $750,000 (Murder in the third degree). You may fight any charges by hiring a lawyer to represent you before a judge. The lawyer may be able to lessen or negate the charges all together.

The death penalty was outright banned in 2018 by the Maximusian Legislature, and had been individually baned by every county since 2003. Corporal Punishment has not yet been baned by the Maximusian Legislature. With this said, every county in Libertas Omnium Maximus has made the punishment illegal, therfore, it is no longer in use.

Government

The Libertas Omnium Maximus Government is devided into two distinct sections: The Fedral Government, and the Provincial Government. There are 5 Maximusian Provinces, each with their own provincial government. The provincial governments are in charge of raising taxes to support their own fire department, EMT service, and police force. The provincial governments are also charged with upholding justice in their province. The last duty of the provincial government is to make laws that will effect only their province. Thouse laws may directly upose that of the fedral government. This gives the provincial governors, who are directly elected by their province, a large amount of power.

The Fedral Government is split into two sections, the Executive and Legislative branches. The Legislative Branch is made up of 10 Congressmen from each province. They are all directly elected by their respective provinces and serve 6 year terms. Congress meets once per month (usually on the 29th) to ratify legislation which can be proposed any time by any Congressperson. Congress may meet behind closed doors to create a declaration of war or to create a new tax bill, however, they may open their doors to the public if they choose or are ordered to do so by the president. Congress’s main jobs are to collect Fedral income taxes, make declarations of war, create and propose legislation, and, if nesssary, vote to impeach the president.

The Executive branch, which consists of the president, his/her cabinet, and his/her advisors, are in charge of commanding the military of Libertas Omnium Maximus, signing off on legislation, which is required before it can pass and become a law, and serving as the nation’s figurehead. The branch is led, unsurprisingly, by the president, who essentially performs almost every duty of the executive branch to a degree. His advisors are essentially there for advice and support. The president is elected once every 6 years by an electoral college that is directly influenced by a popular vote. The president may serve as many terms as he/she can. In addition, the president may choose his own cabinet and advisors.
