Suleman Chaher (born October 1st, 1969) is the current Prime Minister of Lauchenoiria. He succeeded Laura Moore following a vote of no confidence proposed by himself. He is a member of the Communist Party, after defecting from the Liberal Party on the day he became Prime Minister.
Former President Leanna Walker refused to recognise Chaher's government, leading Parliament to enact impeachment proceedings. Walker was succeeded by President Kieran MacKenzie, who promptly recognised Chaher's government.
Early Life & Education
Suleman Chaher was born in Melissa City, Lauchenoiria. He had four siblings, three of whom emigrated from Lauchenoiria as adults. He studied at the University of West Summersea.
Early political career
Suleman Chaher began his career in the now-defunct Socialist Reform Party, joining age 17. He campaigned for the party from 1986 until 1991. In 1991, he left the party and joined the Left Alliance. He took a job as Head of Communications at Left Alliance HQ in January 1992.
In 2001, he changed party again, this time joining the Liberal Party. He was elected as a Member of the Ulinarian Parliament the same year. In the 2004 by-election in Elopolis West, Chaher was the Liberal Party candidate, and achieved a surprising victory.
In 2014, he was offered the position of Home Secretary by Laura Moore and accepted. In 2018, he proposed a vote of no confidence in Laura Moore.
Prime Minister
Following the vote of no confidence, Chaher became Prime Minister, though this was not officially recognised by President Leanna Walker. Only after her impeachment was Chaher's government officially formed.
As Prime Minister, he pushed through the vote on impeaching Leanna Walker, and subsequently pushed President Kieran MacKenzie to begin an emergency procedure suspending the Lauchenoirian Constitution.
On July 1st 2018, Chaher was the victim of an assassination attempt and remains in hospital.
Controversy
Opponents of Chaher's government consider his actions on 9th May 2018 to have been an illegal coup d'état. Some have argued that Leanna Walker was only impeached following the jailing of 11 Members of Parliament, thus making the vote illegitimate.
