Liga 1 is the second-division of the Slokasian football. Originally founded in 1920 as Division 1 the league was the top-flight until 2001. In that year, 8 clubs formed the SPL to create more competition and revenue among them. Division 1 was then renamed as Liga 1 in 2004 with Liga 2 and Liga Nasional being formed at the same time. Since 2022, Liga 1 has been sponsored by Sun-Mart being known officially as the SunMart Liga 1.
History
Format
Since, 2004 Liga 1 has consisted of 22 clubs playing each other twice, home and away. The regular season lasts from September to April with the top two teams being promoted to the Slokaisian Premier League and the team's placing 3-7th each playing other in other in a 4 team tournament with the winner earing an automatic place in the Federation Cup Quarter-Final and a chance to play the 10th placed team in the SPL for a spot in the next season's SPL. The bottom 4 teams are relegated to Liga 2, with the 3 best-team's and a playoff winner from the prior season joining the league.
Competition
Teams play every time in the league twice, as well as 2 "rivalry games" scheduled for the final month of the season. This period known as Liga Madness, has specialty rules such as no-ties being allowed, with a match going straight to penalties after 90 minutes plus extra time. A win on penalties counts as 3 point, while a loss counts as 1. Outside of this period, standard point system rules apply, 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. In the event two team's are tied for a position in the league on point's, goal difference, goals scored and then fair play is used.
